For the record, I voted "Searching for meaning" in welshy's poll, and jeez, it is more appropriate at the moment than it ever was.

I am so ticked I can barely see straight right now, so forgive grammar and spelling errors that are bound to occur.

I don't ask a whole lot out of people. Treat me as well as you treat everyone else in your life. Not unreasonable in my eyes, but apparently too much to ask for some people.

If I'm going to be your go-to girl for emotional support when you need it, the LEAST you can do is acknowledge my existence when everything is going OK in your life.

Yes, I know the answer - suck it up buttercup and cut the emotional vampires out of my life completely. I think I'm just seriously ticked over the fact that I even have to contemplate such a thing. And people wonder why I'm a borderline hermit at times... Why bother being there for people if all they're going to do is take advantage of it and leave you high and dry the rest of the time?

Why do some people have to suck SO MUCH????

Dear BC,

The committee has reviewed your application for rant, rant, RANT status. It is with regrets that we inform you that your current difficulties, as expressed, do not qualify for rant, rant, RANT status. Upon further review, the committee would like to offer three suggestions for proceeding.

First, you could possibly qualify for "forceful complaining" or "psuedo-cryptic whining" or perhaps even "JV rant" and resubmit your application for rant, rant, RANT status. Second, you could update your rant, rant, RANT application with more information and fervor, including detailed specificity regarding the offending character and your feelings of rage. Or third, you could simply realize that people will take advantage of you only as long as you let them, and the person you're really angry with is probably you, examine that a little deeper as to why it happens and make the necessary corrections, resubmitting an application under Self-Actualizing Individual.

Again, the committee would like to note the application for rant, rant, RANT status, and we thank you for your time, but at this point, we must reject your application.

Sincerely,

The BT COJ Rant Committee

I hear you.  I hav had to cut numerous people out of my life due to the emotional vampire effect.  The sad part is, in general, people suck.  I treasure the ones I find who don't fall into this category, but it's a pretty small number.

{{{HUGS}}}

I'll be glad to listen if you need a direct line btich session.

Truthfully, the key is in the sentence "I don't ask a whole lot out of people." I know because I do the same thing. I had to reassess the people that I have around me and the people that come new into my life ... and if they don't willingly give back as much as I'm willing to give them, I have to distance myself. Otherwise, I'm exhausted and depressed with other people's problems and don't have anyone I can lean on when I need them.

Don't give up on people ... people are great ... or they can be ... just start demanding more for yourself. It takes a little work, but it's worth it!

You're wonderful ... don't forget it!

This is why I have a few good friends that I can count on and the rest of the world can take a hike!  We live in what I call the "give me" age.  I have a young guy here at work that I have to remind several times a day that the world and more specific the shop, doesn't revolve around him.  To me the answer is boundaries.

very negative posts...

I give, give, and give some more and NEVER expect anything in return...

I think the rejection post stated that maybe the anger is with your self...

You never fully know what's going on or what's gone on in a person's life... you always have to remember contrary to a few previous posts that people for the most part are GOOD and some people you have to dig very, very, very deep to find it but it's in there...

everybody is different...

An ex-friend of mine told me that as adults we can choose to be someone's friend or choose not too. That is the beauty of having our own minds. I personally "fired" all of my friends just over a year ago because I was getting NOTHING from having them in my lives...if anything I was more stressed. It was hard at first and I am not sure if they understand even today but that is the way it needed it to be. Hang in there and do what you need to do but also realize that there are lots of GREAT people out there....we are just far and few between!

I just had a session with my therapist about something very similar.  I feel like, for the most part, I'm always the one initiating contact with my family and certain long-time, long-distance friends.  And it really upsets me.

She reminded me that I can't really KNOW what's going on with them and can't assume that they're not calling because they don't care, or are too busy, etc.  I can only KNOW that it upsets me.

She then suggested that I contact each of them and say something to the effect of:

It makes me sad when we don't talk very often.  I miss you, and would like to talk with you more than we do.  Can we trade off calling each other?

Basically, it's a "I feel (...) when (...)" statement followed by a suggestion.  If it's coming from a place of love and respect, it might help to open up a line of communication.

Your friend may not realize that you want to talk to with her.  She may not be aware that you're upset that she hasn't called.  You should at least give her the opportunity to apologize and make it right between you two.

(That last part is said by someone who is a reformed flaky friend, who is currently trying hard to make amends with other friends for abandoning them.)

No, I think I'm mad at Scout - if I am just a figment of his imagination, I should be much better looking, more wealthy and a better artist.
