Comments: Oh man, this was a fast field! From the gun all the collegiate and Howard County Strider fasties were off. I started quick and was still not even that far up. In the first mile was the larger of the two "hills" which I knew about and used to race bikes on (there were at least two races each year using the same overall loop as this). By the hill it was already stretched out. The first mile came at about 300 meters after the hill and I hit it at 5:31. GULP ....... and the front runners were through almost a minute ahead of me!!! At that point the standings were pretty well established. I had a guy with me at the 1 mile mark who moved up a little but from then on no one passed me. I caught a young guy at the turn onto the lollipop portion (a court road) to the out and back and worked on keeping my pace and not get passed myself. 2 miles came at 6:03 and the mile to go was at 12:06, so it was entirely possible to get a PR here. Passed another young guy at the 2 mile mark and worked on staying with the older guy ahead of me. Never could catch him as I was always around 10 - 15 yards behind him. But no one caught me either. HR was spiking by this point in the mid to high 190's, so I really didn't have another gear to kick it up. Made the turn into the parking lot and had the last 100 meters to go. I wasn't going to sprint and saw that I was at around 18:06 on the race clock, so I pushed a little more to get my PR but knew I was nowhere near the front of the race (in my eyes). Crossed the line at hit the watch. What would you do differently?: Train more for speed since I've been really slack in the month since Boston. I ran my fastest race pace ever in this one, but still don't really feel fast. Running in this field definitely humbles the tri-attitude of placing well in other races. ;-P Post race
Warm down: Sat down, chatted with a few runners and hydrated as it was REALLY humid and warm. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of speed training, fatigued legs for the last month, decreased running mileage ...... strong field probably HELPED me more than anything to push it. Event comments: This was the first race for this group and it was run extremely well. They had over 50 prizes in a field of only about 150, so people had a good shot at an award. Because two of the top 5 were in my AG I was awarded 3rd in the 30-39 mens AG. Got a $10 gift certificate to the local running store for my efforts and the race tee was a really nice tech shirt. The field was phenomenal, almost assuredly brought out by the big awards for the top runners. There were 5, that's right .... 5 people than ran this race in the 15's. The announcer said the same thing that I already knew, this will go down as one of the fastest 5k's in Howard County Strider's history. Last updated: 2007-05-26 12:00 AM

Got up, took the dog out, drove to the venue and picked up my number and tee-shirt. Really nice tech tee! For a $20 entry this was a well run race with lots of goodies overall. Took a Gu at 45 minutes to go and sipped my Gu2O.
2.5 mile run on the course, light stretching. Gu at 15 minutes to go with some more Gu2O. New this was going to be a very fast field as there was $200/$100/$50 for the top 3 overall and other decent prizes. Boy was I right!
