Subject: Couldn't sleep, sweating after workout
Hi all,
Last night my workout consisted of one hour on the bike and 45minutes in the pool. This is the longest workout I have done in years. Afterward, around 10PM, I was falling asleep sitting at my computer, so I went to bed. I couldn't sleep, tossing and turning, HR still up a bit at about 85, sweating, I felt like I do at the end of a workout.

I did eat and drink after the workout: I had a Pria bar, some cheese and a shish-kabob with chicken, onions and pepper on it. Drank about 3 glasses of water. Felt terrible until about 1PM.

Any ideas? Thanks,
Nancy

If it was a hard workout then it takes two to three hours to really get back to normal where you can sleep. If it is a light workout then it should not be as bad. What time was the workout over and how hard were you working?

When you work out, you ask your body's cooling system to turn on.  After a really intense workout, sometimes the "air conditioning" stays on for awhile after, so your HR, temp, and sweat glands are still active/elevated.  Make sure you're drinking enough water/sports drink before/during/after to replenish and rehydrate.  Sometimes working out so close to bedtime confuses your body - you've just asked it to wake up and perform, and it has trouble settling down.  Give yourself more time to return to resting heart rate, no caffiene before bed, gentle stretching, create some quiet time.   Give your body queues that it is shutting down for the night.

Move these big workouts to the afternoon or morning. OR break them up into two seperate workouts AM/PM.

I don't have this problem, I have the opposite. I crash after a big workout and if I do them early in the day I need a nap! LOL.

You need to figure out when your energy is at its peak and low. try to get your workouts in when your energy is peaking. It really helps. For me this is 3-5 pm. I tend to struggle with early morning races.

I have this problem whether I work out in the am or pm. Obviously worse if it is the pm. I fall asleep sweating without any blankets under a fan and wake up four hours later freezing. My wife thinks I'm nuts. She has to sleep on the far side of the bed and not touch me at all. I pump out heat like a furnace.

It doesn't help that there is usually 2 dogs in the bed with us. I can't kick the dogs out... the wife would rather sleep with them than me.

Thanks - I don't think I drank enough water, and I went from running around to falling asleep at my computer, to a shower to bed. No other down time.

I teach, so I only have time at night, but in a few weeks, I am off, so I can move them. Thanks!

That is probably enough time if you are winding down and not running around showering and getting stuff ready for tomorrow. I like to take an hour before I go to bed and do nothing. Just lounge. That usually allows me to fall asleep pretty quickly. I try to finish my workouts by 7pm.
