Overall Rank = 9/102
Age Group = M30-39
Age Group Rank = 3/19
Pre-race routine:

Went over early to check in and get setup in transition. Also, wanted to watch the youth race as the Canada Games hopefuls were racing in these waves. Some fast kids :)
Event warmup:

Did around a 2km warmup. Several pickups to race pace for 30" and then long recovery. Quick warmup on the bike, about 5km, again, pickups to race pace and then long recovery. The wind was starting to back off at this point so I was hopeful for the race. Finally, race briefing and then 300m warmup in the pool before the race.
Swim
  • 12m 43s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 42s / 100 meters
Comments:

I started a little too fast (about 1:30/100) and then tried to settle in - after the halfway point I could feel myself slipping a great deal in the water and just wasn't feeling strong. I tried to think of good form and swimming strong, but it wasn't too be. Overall I was 3" slower than last year and had hoped to be about 30" faster. Victoria said my flipturns were terrible so something to pay more attention to and gain some time for next year.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more - I've been focusing on the bike and run this year and have spent limited time in the water. I guess the time isn't too surprising but still doesn't make me happy. Next year I'll aim for sub 12'.
Transition 1
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

Great transition. No issues.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 33m 18s
  • 17.75 kms
  • 31.98 km/hr
Comments:

The ride was brutal - just like last year. No rain this year but the wind seemed just as bad. I went hard into the wind and then dialed back the effort a little with the tailwind. The tailwind was down the long runway so it was a good time to just sit in the aero position and cruise. Felt pretty good throughout and really pushed the pace.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - solid ride! Improved by about 3:30 over last year - all the time on the bike focus has definitely been worth it!
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Great transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 20m 57s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 11s  min/km
Comments:

My goal was to go sub 20' for the run. Just couldn't pickup the pace enough to make that happen - however, I dropped a minute off of last year's time so overall I'm happy. I was hurting for the entire run, flirting with going too hard and managed to put forth a consistent run - didn't have anything left to really pick it up on lap 3. May have been able to meet my goal if I had gone easier on the bike, but my plan for this race was to push both bike and run.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster :) Nothing really, just start to build a little speed during some workouts - need to include some more regular hills and/or tempo work.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking and stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Time in the water, the wind and leg speed on the run.

Event comments:

Love this race - it was my first and it's nice to see how I progress from year to year.
