Hi all,

I plan on racing in my first Oly distance triathlon in just three weeks. Can anyone give me any advice about the San Jose International Triathlon? I am mainly worried about the the swim section, as I am a really weak swimmer? Look forward to any advice about this race.

Thanks in advance!

Ryan

Have done this race many times...not doing it this year, but the swim is quite easy...flat water, just watch for other swimmers kicking you in the face...There are quite a few turns in the swim tho, so pay attention to where you are going....Almaden lake should be open by now...you could probably get a practice swim in.

good luck...wish I was going to be there with you.

Did you do it with a wetsuit ?

Am undecided whether I should do mine with one or just go with my tri-shorts . The start is going to be around 730 am so the water might just be cold

Looking at pictures of last years event online, it looks like most people used sleeveless wetsuites.

Just wanted to update the thread with my exp.

I had gone for a OWS last Wed. (they've opened the lake for supervised-OWS ) Its nice the lifeguards have a boat in the water and they allow you to swim in a triangle out to the island ... approx. 500yds.

I've only "swum" in Redwood Shores and that was downright yucky compared to almaden . The latter is green but doesn't stick , methinks. and there are no terror weeds that get to you

had also gone on a brick on sunday to experience the bike course ... and man , is it boring or what well at least the part that goes thru' farming country is . the climb up Bailey is probably a cakewalk but haven't been doing much hills recently so felt the burn a bit . the run course , at least when I went (11 am ) is an absolute scorcher . Hopefully its not so bad on this Sunday .

Thanks for the recon work! It is my first Oly distance and I am super nervous. Regardless, I will be at the start line.

How is the traffic on the bike course? It it too dangerous to give it a spin at 6:30PM on a week night?

I did it both times with a wetsuit, more because I don't have the body to go shirtless...but if I wasn't a hairy bowl of jello, I wouldn't use the wet suit...

Well , the section from the park to Santa Teresa Blvd (till probably Snell Ave) has got a bit of traffic but once u hit the farm country and head into the hills @ Bailey Ave , u should be fine . McKean is a backroad so as such u shouldn't get too much traffic . Almaden is another matter tho' but then u won't be on it for long .

have decided that am going with my wetsuit too ... the water's probably going to be warm enough but I like the extra sense of security that my w/s gives me
besides anything that helps my sad swim pace , I'll take :-

I am really bummed I am not doing it this year...hopefully next year.  I just didn't have the money to get my bike ready to train on...and to register...I really enjoy this race, I am not a biker, so I don't really mind that its a boring course...actually love riding through almaden area.  Hoping to get my bike fixed this weekend, and then possibly start training again.
