Subject: Am I screwed...bad runner
I am a pitiful runner, I have had 6 knee surgeries (over 10 years) and have a current case of nasty plantar fasciitis in one foot, but I have no excuses (maybe a few excuses)!!! My orthopod forbid me from doing another tri (this will be my third), but I never listen to doctors anyway. My question is this...My tri (.75S, 14MB, 5MR) is on September 16 (15 weeks). I have a workout plan, etc., but my second run on my 15 week plan was yesterday (2nd run in the last 2 months due to my foot injury), and it was slow and painful. I'm not overweight, but I'm a muscular 225lbs. I think laying off the weights and running, swiming, and biking will drop me to about 210 by race day (yes, I'm a clydsdale). All the workouts on the site seem like they are really short for the runs, is 15 weeks enough time to get up to 5 Miles on race day? Panicking a little here...especially since my wife (a stay-at-home mom who works out 6 days a week) and I have a friendly wager and she has been training a year.

My plan is to work my way up to 60 minutes of running (bricks in there too) within 8 weeks? I ran 30 minutes steady pace and could have gone 10 more without dying, but it wasn't easy. I'm dedicated, but do I have enough time? Am I being a wimp? God I HATE running, but love the feel of crossing the line.

I'm a strong enough cyclist and okay swimmer, but the run has me scared. I totally bonked during the last tri.

You sound like the perfect person for Aquabike!

What does your orthopod say about you running after 6 surgeries?

Orthopod says don't do it...but I have at least one left in me. I don't have much cartilege left in my rt knee, so he's not a fan or any running exercises, but he got me into cycliing which I love. I ride my road bike 60 to 80 miles a week normally, so I'm in decent shape. Now running...ohh how i despise running. My wife beat me in the last tri by 2 mins (long story with a sad ending for the hero), and we have a friendly wager that was even set out in our Christmas letter (I must win for my honor and to back up my talk).

I'm still focusing on my bike and swim in training to avoid the pounding on the knee(s), but I'm really looking to do the minimal amount of effective training for the run.

He says no football, basketball, etc...I still do it..."My ortho has a killer set of tools, he can fix anything." (sorry for the Fast Time at Ridgemont High reference).

I ride my road bike 60 to 80 miles on a very hilly course in 3 or 4 workouts each week, so I'm in decent shape. Now running...ohh how i despise running. My wife beat me in the last tri by 2 mins (long story with a sad ending for the hero), and we have a friendly wager that was even set out in our Christmas letter (I must win for my honor and to back up my talk). She swims like a fish, bikes like crap, and runs so freaking hard you can't believe it. I have her on the bike, she has me on the swim, but the run is my surprise.

Wimp! You and my Brother-In-Law with the wacked knees and running, man I'll never complain again!

Any way, in theory if you follow the 7-10 rule you'll double your long run distance every 7 weeks if you increase 10% each week.  I see you ran 3.4 miles or so this week.  So in 7 weeks you could be doing 6.6 miles and 13 miles another 7 weeks after that, simple eh!  Just make sure your not going too hard on your longer runs, goal is to keep it easy, run-walk if needed and build your base, and listen to your body!

Aquajogging. Do your running workouts in the pool. Maybe try 1 actual run/week on land. Do the rest in the water.

Good luck!

Feeling encouraged already. I have a set up for aqua-jogging in my pool (you look nuts, but it works), and I plan on using that if my knees start to hurt. My bad knee has felt fine so far (I attribute that to my cycling over the past year)...no pain at all after the last two runs, so as long as that keeps up I feel okay.

I will try the 7/10 in my workouts...should give me plenty of time.

I'm a coffeeaholic and I notice that I get muscle cramps if I have an extra cup or 5. Other than chugging water right behind the coffee, any advise to avoid cramps?

I was a catcher in the Pirates organization in the 90's. I was supposed to play in Augusta, GA for the Greenjackets in 1996, but never made it that far due to a knee surgery (first of three on right knee) in spring training...Thanks for the message.

Hi hear you on the coffeeaholic deal, gotta stay hydrated!  Not sure of your sweat rate, etc.  How about downloading this and giving it a read through regarding nutrition-electorlye-hydration aspects of the game.
