Who even took Charlie Yu seriously in the first place? How the heck did that piece of garbage get published?

There is sportsmanship, and there is holding the world championship in high esteems, but I can't believe that some jerk's downtalk can make it through any editorial process in a reputable publication.

He wasn't even factually right? Hahaha

Yu's letter is laughable enough that I wonder if it was a troll.   If it was, it certainly got it's result...

the only Ironman is the one who won Kona that year. If you win it you can wear the IM-Dot logo but only for 1 year. After that your a nothingman, because there is a new and better Ironman
I am watching for WTC to brand races so I can do it and put on the m-dot tatatoo, but that is just me.

Seems like Mr. Yu's "B" sample needs to be tested for AS2HO, and determine if he needs a personality enhancement drug.

If Charlie Yu's letter was not a troll, then I'm seriously disappointed.  Chris Hauth responded in a fantastic manner, much better than I would have at first!  I know 1 or 2 people who share Yu's viewpoint, though, and it sickens me.  I hope to do an IM in a couple years in order to fulfill a dream/passion I have had since HS (9 years ago).  I probably won't ever qualify for Kona, and I can accept that.  Will I call myself an Ironman when (if) I cross the finish line of which ever IM I do?  You better believe it!!!  Anyone who puts in the effort, the time, the sacrifice to even CONSIDER finishing an IM is awesome in my book.  I think of our own Tupuppy and his IM AZ trip - it bothers me that Yu would not consider him an Ironman!  Whatever - b/c of his efforts, Tupuppy deserves the title.  I think Hauth is right - it's the journey we travel, the lifestyle, that makes us Ironmen and Ironwomen.  I hope that Yu can see that and embrace that some day - and begin to really enjoy life as a triathlete.

I do find it interesting whenever you hear "no your did not do Kona your not an IM" or "you did not do a WTC race so your not an Ironman" is those people tend to never had done the distance themselves.

Marathons talk me one thing and that is you ahve to respect the distance and with an Ironman you do a marathon and your only 1/3 the way there. Really is amasing.

I think that publications publish letters-to-the-editor like that one from time to time, not because they believe the letter or agree with it, but because it stirs the pot and generates interest.  I think the letters to the editor section exists to show all viewpoints.  Otherwise, it wouldn't be very interesting.

I bet a lot of people went to the website or at least looked through the magazine, just to read that letter.  It's all about eyeballs.

You're dead on. I think it's just a way to get people to the website and obviously, it's working.
