Subject: Should I get a hydration system?
Ok, I ran out of water and bonked the other day coming back from a ride crossing a mountain. Not cool, I had to call for a ride home.

Currently I have two 32oz water bottles which I have been using for water only. My uncle suggested an energy drink and more water, so I just ordered Hammer gel and energy drinks. I was thinking of getting a Camelbak, but wanted some advice. Are Camelbaks restrictive or cause you to heat up? Any advice on what hydration systems work best? Is there a better alternative to carrying large amounts of water and energy drinks than the backpacks?

Thanks!

Yes! There are tons of options for bike mounted hydration systems - just check out trisports.com (for the BT discount) or any other tri or cycling shop.

And if you're riding long enough where a bonk is an issue, you should definitely be carrying something other than water - you need calories and electrolytes!

I personally don't like riding with a Camelbak. It rides up onto my neck, and makes me over heat since it doesn't breathe, and is exactly like biking with a backpack on. I greatly prefer having a couple of bottles of Gatorade mounted on my bike.

Know your sweat rate!  64 oz water should be good for 2-4 hours.  And if you riding longer than 1.5 hours you better have calories! On my long rides I bring along Hammer Nutrition Perpetuem, electrolytes, and a power bar.  Fill up the Bento Box, you just never know!

I use a Camelback when doing long MTB rides and have used in when I was on my old RB.  Today on my tri-bike I use a 28 oz aerobottle and 24 oz bottle.  If I need more fluids I stop someplace either to buy or at a park to fill up again.

Read this too to learn more about nutrition, hydration, electolytes, etc.
