Subject: First ride with the local tri shop group last night...PANT PANT

Just wanted to share a first tri-specific group ride experience from last night.

Two groups went out.  The A group was advertised as 20+ pace, but we were hitting 27 in the flats.  The B group had an advertised 18 mph pace.  Two friends and I joined the ride (they've each done it before but this was my first time).

There are 5-6 miles of warmup, and then the two groups split off.  We did paceline rotation, each pulling up to the front then moving left.  After we had been out for 4-5 miles (after the warmup), right as I was coming to pull on the crest of a hill, I rolled right through a pretty big dip (did not see it until I was in it) and it caused my back wheel(!) to come off the ground!  I stayed with it and no incident came of it, thank goodness.  Everyone maneuvered around the dip behind me (never had a chance to point).

Then, as we turned back toward the store, the pace jumped up another 1.5-2mph, right after I had come off a pull.  I looked over at one of my friends, and he was done.  That was enough for me to throw in the towel too.  He is racing Kure Beach this weekend, so this is a taper week for him anyway.  Thus, he and I soldiered back at 19-20mph, finishing the ride right at a 20.0 avg over 30.6 miles.  Not that impressive, but we had some slow stretches and slower neighborhood riding at the finish.

Fun ride to do paceline in the aerobars!  I rode primarily behind my friends who I trust greatly, and know their bike-handling skills are top-notch.  Not sure why I felt like I had to drop off on the return, because I was feeling pretty strong there, but I think when I saw my buddy drop off, I decided I'd rather bring it home with him.  The B group caught up with us about 4 miles from the ride finish, only to drop us when my buddy dropped his chain 200 ft after we regrouped.  So, he and I finished DFL...

I didn't think I was that tired, but I slept like a log last night, and did not want to get out of bed this morning!

Sounds like a pretty solid ride, sans the near mishap. I am just getting my bike skills up and a 20mph for a 30 mile ride would be welcomed by me. I am sure the rides with the group will really help...keep up the good work!

Sounds like it was a fun ride and a good workout.  I am a little surprised that they didn't say anything about the aerobars.  Most pacelines I've ridden in don't like that.

Fun ride to do paceline in the aerobars!

The pace looks impressive to me. However, I would edit the comment above to read, "DUMB to paceline in the aerobars." But that's just me...

Not dumb if everyone's on the same page.  There were no tri-newbies on this ride.  As long as you maintain a little larger margin when following, there are no issues.  I can get to my brakes on my Felt as quick from the aerobars as I can in the drops or on the hoods on my road bike.

IF you are riding a tight paceline like it should be, I would pay to REALLY see if you can get of your bars, manover around and hit the breaks if someone goes down in front of you at 20+ mph. of course you are free to ride anyway you want...

Isn't drafting illegal in Tris???

But, as Jorge says, ride as you wish...

I'd never ride in aerobars in a paceline unless I was out front pulling....just wouldn't be safe.

Sure it is fun to go faster than you normally can with the same effort, but trust me bike crashes aren't fun.

Other thing I have found in some group rides folks tend to show off and really hammer which isn't the point; when you are pulling you need to keep the same pace as the folks before you.

I did a group ride with mixed roadies and triatheltes in Fl and was dropped from the last group and ended up DFL and had no clue how to get back to where I came from. I'd have loved someone, a friend like you, stay with me when I was toast. Nice move on your part!

I had a nice long reply written up to all your comments, but my pc puked.  Suffice it to say, you have your own strong opinions.  I was proud enough of an accomplishment in my biking to post that I joined an "A" ride for the first time ever, and you guys are ripping me apart for something that the 14 cyclists were doing together, efficiently, and safely.  I was never closer than 24 inches from the cyclist in front of me (which is about 12-18 inches more than I leave on my road bike).

For all new triathletes, don't ride in your aerobars in a paceline.  It's dangerous.

Couldn't help myself, mate.

BTW:
As I said, the pace was impressive--you should be proud. I know I couldn't hold that pace for 30+ miles right now.

It's been my experience that riding the aerobars is fine, as long as you get the group's okay first. I rarely do it myself, just too much that can go wrong. But, if the rest of the group is okay with you doing it, have fun.
