Subject: Set of Aero Wheels, need expert advice...

Ok, it seems weird to aks for expert advice on beginnertriathlete.com, but anyway...

Here's the deal : I have a pair of Mavic Xyrium Elite on my bike and wish to upgrade for a set of aero wheels specifically for triathlon. I do not necessarily want a disk wheel though, as it is almost always windy in Québec. That said, I would like to have advice on the following sets of wheels :

- Zero wheels (either 038 or 050) : 1300$
*see : http://www.zerocomponents.com/wheels.html(I could have a 25% rebate on any of those sets...)
- Zipp wheels (606) : ~2000$
  * see :
http://www.zipp.com/Products/Wheels/tabid/85/CategoryID/2/List/1/Level/1/ProductID/54/Default.aspx?SortField=ISBN%2CISBN
- Any other option I should consider...

Thanks in advance for your advices !

Christian.

P.S. clincher or tubular ?

The 606 is one of the best all around and versatile wheels out there.  The Zero's are cheaper by far, but they are also not as deep of a rim section and weigh 120 grams more (in the tubular model).

I'm Zipp biased, so if you can float the cost I'd go for them ....... and for race wheels, tubular is a no brainer.

Get a disc.  And clinchers.

Honestly, I would get a disc or a disc cover for the rear wheel and get as deep a rim as possible (or a tri-spke like the Hed3) on the front--e.g., Zipp 808, Blackwell 100.  Wind is good for aero wheels.

I would also go with clinchers, but for the full debate it's probably just easier to go over to ST and do a search on it there.  Make your own decision.

I have the Zero wheels on my tri bike, and Ksyrium SL's on my road bike. I have a set of Ritchey DS pros (aero) for the road bike that I use for training, and can't really see much difference in speed, corners are where the you feel it. The Zero wheels are great, never had a problem with them.

I tend to agree with John up above. Go with a disk unless for some unforseen reason you are against them. Other wise I am riding HED3's in the front and the back and they are plenty aero. A little heavy but once you get them spinning they freekin fly...

Plus the option with the HEDs is that all I need to do now is add a disk and I have one of, if not the fastest proven combination of wheels on a bike. In fact I may have just spent another grand and didn't know it....

Ultimately it comes down to how much money you are willing to spend. ZIP makes a great product but tends to be pricy.

If you get a disk, get a Renn. They're cheap.

Yeah, if you believe everything that you read on ST ....... I'll stick to the disc/808 combo. as the fastest that I read about .....

I tend to agree with you, but we're pretty much splitting hairs at this stage.  It certainly qualifies as "one of" the fastest.

Yep, if you're into extremely marginal (even questionable) gains in performance at a cost 40% higher, then the 808 is for you!

Well according to what he weighs.... if it is windy and you have a deep dish on the front you will get extra benefit from a head or tail wind....

but if you are a lighter rider and there are some crosswinds you will lose your benefits from being blown around on the road.

Also note that shorter riders also supposedly get almost the same benefit from a aero helmet as they do aero wheels. Of course you have to have both to look cool and fast right?

Personally I am running Xlab Tri-Spokes on the front and back. I did get knocked around a little by the crosswinds on the 3rd lap at IMAZ.

Personally I am running Xlab Tri-Spokes on the front and back. I did get knocked around a little by the crosswinds on the 3rd lap at IMAZ.

FWIW, a tri-spoke wheel supposedly has a much greater side-force impact from cross-winds than a deep rim like the 808.  And there is some evidence that a disc in the rear may actually "smooth" out some of the side-force impacts versus having another deep rim on the rear.

But it is true that if you can't handle the wheels in certain conditions then the aero benefit becomes somewhat irrelevant.  And being a bigger rider does make handling an easier chore.

And, of course, I added an aero helmet to complete the look cool & fast.    (Or at least completed the total tri-dork look.  )

I've heard Flashpoints (made by Zipp)  are pretty nice for the $$.   You can get a 60mm set for  $1100-1200

Thanks a lot to everybody ! I can see that this is a vast world (aero wheels) and that I'll have to make comparisons and search  for different products before buying...

As my fitness is almost 100%, I was also thinking of a aero helmet in my quest of (human-power) free-extra-speed ... What would you recommend ? What do you do in HOT conditions ?

Thanks again,

Christian.

The question of whether to wear an aero helmet on a hot day has come up on ST recently, and no one seemed bothered by the lower number od air vents, even people wearing black helmets had no issues to report. Btw, there are plenty of used excellent aero wheels around for a bargain, I bought a pair of 650 Zipp 404's for $380, and a disc for $200. I've seen 700c wheels at higher prices, but still very cheap compared to new. Just find someone who used race wheels for a few times then swapped bikes, wheels or sports and you'l be set.

I'm curious why Christ would need help answering any of these questions?

Hey,

Just another question... I could have one of those sets used :

- Reynolds Stratus AV tubular (~1000$)

- Spinergy Rev-X clinchers (~500$)

Anyone  knows these wheels ? One of my friends told me that the Spinergy are pretty good. I read some posts about t he Reynolds and it seems to rock either...
