US Women's Triathlon Series
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 29m 52s
Overall Rank = 266/1880
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 58/419
Pre-race routine:

Got up, had a huge bowl of cereal and some coffee... waited for my friend Kathy to pick me up.

Drove to the race listening to Nickelback in her car. Had a grand old time on the ride over.

Into transition area, set up my spot... ran into Jessica who set her spot up right next to mine... visited the porta potties and hung out. Lost Kathy. Found her again before we went to watch the Elite waves take off.

Visited with Beth (BAMBAM66), generally wandered around... and managed to miss the BT group photo.
Event warmup:

I didn't do a warm up. That's alright.
Swim
  • 12m 32s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

I just don't see any real measurable improvement in my swim times from year to year... sure, I'm getting a little better, but the VERY FIRST time I did this race, my swim time was 12:48... and I probably swam 5000 yards in total to train that time. I don't know.

I was aggressive, seeding myself up front, and I stayed with the leaders of my wave. Running over the prior wave and even the wave before that. I did not hold back. I swam entirely freestyle and did not walk about the buoys, even though the water was very shallow in parts. I swam til my fingers grazed the bottom.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. I felt like I was exerting myself sufficiently. I was working hard... dispelled the idea of budgeting myself for this race and decided I'd just to all out, all the time. And that's what I did. I didn't hold back, didn't have any sighting or goggle issues, and honestly expected to be faster than I was, given the effort extended.
Transition 1
  • 03m 52s
Comments:

T1 is always long here due to the oddball set up. You have to run about a quarter of a mile from the beach area to the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Run faster. I could tell I was running faster this year...so I suppose it will come along as my running continues to improve.
Bike
  • 39m 31s
  • 13.8 miles
  • 20.95 mile/hr
Comments:

I biked like my pants were on fire. Just let 'er rip. No one passed me. Not a single solitary person. I'm quite pleased with this bike split. My legs were burning... it was over before it began. Felt FASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Maybe some race wheels??? Hmmmmmmm. That might be fun.
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Felt cumbersome running with the bike for some reason.
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn that bike-shoe-dismount maneuver.
Run
  • 31m 49s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

This has been my biggest struggle. Running in general has been quite hard for me... due to my faulty L knee...it hurt to run, so I never practiced it with any speed... never did it for prolonged periods of time, and generally loathed every step I took.

I've taken pains to be sure to rehab myself carefully after my scope in October. I began doing track workouts and I have seen progress in the speed area. This is my second fastest 5K ever. Progress. :)

I was able to hold Jessica off til the mile 2 aid station... she caught me in a bit of a space out mode... I was pondering the idea of a "Sports Drink" when she tapped me on the shoulder and bounced on by.

(The volunteers were handing out water and "SPORTS DRINK"... very non specific... I was wondering what type of drink it might be...)

I didn't walk at all on this run. I have a tendency to run... then walk... run... then walk... I did walk thru the aid stations, but I didn't not walk at all otherwise. That is also progress.

This is getting better.
What would you do differently?:

Be faster.

Keeping up the track workouts, because I think I'm starting to see improvements.

Run off the bike more. I was a bit shocked by how my legs felt. They felt really crappy, like they were moving in SLOW MOTION.
Post race
Warm down:

Saw Jessica at the finish line... hung out with her and MJ and some of my other friends... looked all over for Kathy and never actually found her. She was my ride home! Finally found her camped out in the parking lot with the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. This was a pretty solid effort from me, and I'm happy with the results. Of course, I'd always like to be faster... and I'm working on it. :)

I’ve done this same race 4x. I consistently improve...

2005: 1:35:20
2007: 1:29:52

Event comments:

This is my 4th time at this event. My only complaint is the LOOOOOOONG line to get back into transition. We did ALOT of standing around waiting for things.

I will post photos as I get them... A huge shout out to McFuzz and jowisc for being great jockstraps and photographers! It was nice to see your friendly faces literally **EVERYWHERE** out on the course.

I am SO jealous of your bike split!!  What an awesome ride you had.  And really - with the run progress you've been making, I don't think I'll be catching you next year at this race...

Nice race and great seeing you again!

GREAT race  Whizzz!! Unbelievable bike time.  You are my hero.    Take it from me, keep with those track workouts and you WILL get faster.  I used to be a solid 10 m/m and last year was able to get that down to under 9m/m consistently.  It was fun seeing you this weekend.  Looking forward to SoR (I think?)!

Yay Laura!  GREAT job!  2nd-fastest 5-K ever, after swimming hard, running hard through transition, and biking "like your pants were on fire????"  That is an awesome race.

Fun to read about it too.  Cool cool cool that no-one passed you on the bike.  Maybe they were afraid of the flames.

With the swim, with the zig zag zig zag, I think it's hard to get into a rhythm and really build up the momentum you need. I'd cut your self some slack on that.

As for the bike . . . Hmmm, I think you need to teach me how to ride like my pants are on fire 'cuz I'm not nearly that fast. What an awesome bike split!!!!!!

But your run!! You'r second fastest 5k EVER. And at the end of a race. Sweet. Awesome job.

Oooooh ... the fast bike split of the 33 Laura's who did the race.  Who could ask for more than that.  And there are a bazillion Laura's who would kill for that swim time.  You had an awesome race.  Enjoy your nappy!

Congrats!  You're comment about the bike being over before it began cracked me up.  Comparing this to HHH, it was barely a warm up for you!  The only way I'd ever have nobody pass me is if I started last.

Great race Laura and way to ride with your shorts on fire.  Since it ‘felt’ great is that some foreshadowing as to a ride in your life?  Nothing like a new bike to go with race wheels.

Excellent race Laura!  Damn you're fast!  And you've consistently improved over the last 4 years.  Gives me hope that I can accomplish the same.  Doesn't that feel great?

Again, congrats!  You're so cool.

Whizz nice job. Maybe you were too fast on the bike. Seriouly I went to work today and I wondered why the city burnt down. I guess it was because you were on fire.

If your legs do not feel heavy then you did not work hard enough on the Bike.

Whizz I can not for the day when you can beat coredump

Great Race Laura!!

See, that Horribly Hilly 100 may have sucked, but I think it paid off since, as you said, you biked like your pants were on fire!!

I really enjoyed meeting you this weekend, and look forward to seeing you in future races!!
