Champion 5575 Butler | Subject: FOP vs MOP vs BOP How do you all determine if you are FOP, MOP or BOP? I have done 3 tris so far and have been in the top 1/3 (the last one I was actually top 25% in each one. I initially thought that this would be FOP but the more I think about it to me FOP is more if you are competative in your AG at least. How does everyone else determine this? Just curious. |

Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP Hmm.... never thought about it. Maybe more of a bell curve makes sense? Like this: FOP = top 20% Edited by DMW 2007-06-26 8:45 AM |

Champion 6056 Menomonee Falls, WI | Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP Seems to me if you've got three categories, then it breaks down into thirds: Top 33% - FOP Middle 33% - MOP Bottom 33% - BOP That way, I at least have a hope of being an FOP'er some day. (SIGH) |

Resident Curmudgeon 25290 The Road Back | Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP Seems to me the classifications are arbitrary, or, at best, subjective. What does it matter? My take: If you're FOP or BOP, you know it, everything else is MOP. |

Expert 739 Flower Mound, TX | Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP Thirds or the bell curve both sound good to me, but I think that by definition these terms are vague. Ask 10 people and you'll probably get 5-6 different answers. Just last week there was a thread on ST where a lot of people were claiming FOP = Podium!! If you want to convey a vague, broad ranking, use FOP,MOP,BOP. If you want a more precise ranking, use percentiles! |

Champion 5575 Butler | Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP dgillen - 2007-06-26 9:04 AM Definateley agree it is more of a bell curve. IMO probably top 10-15% is FOP, same for BOP everyone else is MOP or like you suggested just use percentage. You could even use FMOP (front Middle of Pack), MMOP or BMOP, the list is endless. Thirds or the bell curve both sound good to me, but I think that by definition these terms are vague. Ask 10 people and you'll probably get 5-6 different answers. Champion 7542 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP Hard to say before hand. Once you have access to complete results, you can look for a "gap" in finishing times or number of finishers within a small interval separating FOP/MOP and MOP/BOP. |

Champion 6107 Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red... | Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP I don't know how it works when you're the FOP, but my thought was that if I've decided to draw the line around 75% for between MOP and BOP - (the MOP being 25% to 75%)...mostly because I've finally creeped above that line myself. (A true bell curve) FOP 1%-25% MOP 25%-75% BOP 75%-100% Kristen |

New user 6 West Allis, WI | Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP My take on it is that deep down you know where you fall. If you have to question if you are Front of the pack - you are mid pack. If you question if you are mid pack, you are bottom of the pack - etc. It's kind of like buying something - if the price really matters, maybe you shouldn't buy it. |

I know I am not FOP but I am definately a fast MOPer. My main goal is to have fun like others have suggested but I like to see how I measure up. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP I think the way the do overall results overinflates men's egos. You lump all the women in and your OA placement as a man looks way better than if you compare your results with just men or just men in your age group. I really like looking at race results split by men and women and placements change rather dramatically if you are not in the top. BOP what I am normally, MOP I am sometimes in small race, FOP what fast folks are.

Crystal Lake, IL | Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP Winner = Winner There are eight categories besides the winner and DFL. Take all finishers other than those two, divide all the results into eight even categories. Determine where you fit in to which category. If you are in a 5 letter category (ie. FOBOP) and wish to shorten the reference use the last three letters as your general category (BOP). Category jumping requires an actual performance in a race in order to justify said jump. If you are slowing down due to aging or crappy training you must use the results of your last race as you category status indicator. If the results of your last race show a category deterioration for reasons other than aging or crappy training (ie. mechanical problems) you may continue to claim the higher category status IF and only if you are able to provide documentation of training sessions which support said category status. 5 letter codes are only to be used when referencing your performance to triathletes and other endurance athletes. Three letter codes may be used with civilians but keep in mind you will have to explain its meaning. Rule exception: 5 letter codes may be used with military persons as they are used to speaking this way. Categories with codes of more than 5 letters are not allowed because, well, that would just be crazy. If you actually follow any of these rules or are still reading at this point you may want to review your training plan as this has been a complete waste of time you could have spent trying to move up in categories. |

Extreme Veteran 574 Crossville, TN | Subject: RE: FOP vs MOP vs BOP I have finished FOP in races and MOP in other races. I feel I am just average. There just didn't happen to be a lot of fast racers at my FOP finishes. My last race was 64th out of 265 OA, 5th out of 15 in AG. Lots of fast racers being a state qualifier. Race before I was 22 out of 251 OA, 3rd out of 18 in AG. Lots of slow racers being a local, less organized race. Chattanooga Waterfront with 1200 racers I will probably be BOP. |

You lump all the women in and your OA placement as a man looks way better than if you compare your results with just men or just men in your age group. Most on-line results let you sort by gender and AG, so you can get the results important to you. Whizzzz found out the Subaru Women's tri also lets you sort by first name. Overall makes sense, and in my case, there are usually more women finishing ahead of me than behind me. To protect my fragile male ego, I should probably not glance at overall results. |
