Are you using a supplement? If so what kind?

I have a friend who sells Advocare products. She gave me samples and they work, however, they are dang expensive. Are there products out there like Advocare but that aren't as expensive?

I take VitaWomen from the Vitamin Shoppe, Biotin, Flaxseed pills, and Xenadrine 8hr (if I need a boost).

Any recommendations?

I supplment my regular diet with

Guinness and BBQ

I do use Endurox after particularly hard efforts, especially long rides. But I am very wary of "supplements"

How do you know "they work"? Seems like very few of the supplements out there are backed with good scientific evidence, most are supported by anectodal comments like "they work." Some may actually be harmful and could dangerously conflict with other supplements or real medications that you are taking.

One of the few that does have some scientific backing is the chondrotin-glucosamine supplement.

I do use Endurox after particularly hard efforts, especially long rides.

There was an article in this month's Runner's World that cited a scientific study that determined that chocolate milk was just as effective recovery drink as Endurox. Cheaper and taste better.

The Flaxseed Pills help keep your insides oily (aka...regularity). When I take them, I feel like it's easier for the food to get through me... =)

The Xenadrine..well, I know it works b/c I can feel the caffeine jolting through me. Not the healthiest way, but atleast it's not ephedra.

The Biotin... I read on sugarfreesheila.com (a fantastic website!) that she takes that for her skin, and she has really pretty skin.

The Vitawomen... I spent MONTHS going from store to store comparing what vitamins had in them. This brand (cheaper) has more than others and is easier to swallow.

I read up a lot on all of these things before I even thought of taking them. I can TOTALLY tell the effects on my body when I don't take them. I'm slower (mentally and physically) and I don't feel quite as ready to 'face the day'.

The cynical bear would maintain that is a result of the placebo effect and you would get the same results with sugar pills.

I drink an Emergen-C everyday, but I think that's more of a vitamin thing. After I lift, I have a whey protein shake. That's it. I'm thinking about taking up G&C and flaxseed, though.

I'm a firm believer in no supplements at all, and this comes from a person who has a college team physician for a dad. I eat a lot and I get all I need from my food. Bear hit the nail right on the head. There is no governing body for supplements so they can say that they do anything they want and not have to back it up. When you pay for those expensive supplements, most of the time all you are doing is making your poop worth a lot of money.

i also take emergen-c almost every day. at breakfast i take a rainbow women's one multi, b-complex, and glucosamine/chondroitin . would probably do me more good to space them out. at lunch i use a protein/spirulina powder in my smoothie.

Exactly. If you eat a good balanced diet including the appropriate foods you do not even need a vitamin supplement. All those pills do is transfer wealth, make your wallet smaller.

True enough, but a wee baggie of powdered Endurox is much more convenient to have in a jersey pocket after a century or big ol' group ride........ and milk makes me puke

There's no accounting for taste.....and sometimes there's no taste ;-)

i agree with both of you. getting what you need from what you eat is ideal. taking a supplement will not make up for an unhealthy diet. in our household we eat tons of whole foods, buy almost exclusively organic, grow organically, cook and bake from scratch, lots of simple foods, rarely eat processed foods. that said, i STILL take a supplement. between my own body's daily needs, breastfeeding, and training, i feel crappy when i don't take them (especially the extra b-vitamins).

Centrum Active Multivitamin and Chondritin/Glucosamine (500mg).

The multivitamin is self explanitory, but the C/G is due to being diagnosed with Chondramalasia (sp?). Essentially, its a roughening of the inside of the kneecap which irritates the tissues sliding across the kneecap when the leg is flexed. The resulting swelling makes me miserable. Running doesn't irritate it as much as fast starts/stops like you'd do in a sprint.

Weird as it may sound, but all the static exercises they gave me to do didn't seem to help. The one thing that seemed to help was regular running.

For those taking Chondritin/Glucosamine, does it really help, and if so, hoe long did it take before you felt/realized the effects, and....were there any side effects? My knees are not beat to death yet, but they are heading that way. Also, should it be recommended by a Dr, or can it be used as a 'self diagnosis/preventitive'?

i started taking it after my first daughter was born, because my knees were sore. i gained a lot of weight at the end of my pregnancy, mostly from swelling (peed out 10 lbs in 24 hours! woo hoo!), and it did a number on my knees. hard to say if the gluc/cond was the only thing that helped, as getting the weight off probably helped the most. i do think the gluc/cond helped a bit though. it probably took 2-3 weeks before i could feel a difference. i also started taking it when i started running this last winter. again, seemed to help, but i was also doing knee strengthening that also seemed to help. when i increased my running milage last month to get ready for a 10k, i started taking it again. takes about 30 days to build up in your system. i didn't talk to a doc, other than my dad, but i did some research online.

I use GNC's MegaMen, Chondritin/Glucosamine/MSM and during excersice Endurolytes and after Endurox.  But my main fuel comes from food, I use these products as additional supplements.

About the Glucosamine & Chondritin my ortho said that these supplement have a long term effects and is mainly for prevention, not for cure a specific pain.

I like to see what Brian from PBN have to say about all this.

My 2 cents.

On a daily basis, just my multi.  I like whey powder for breakfast, easier than eggs.  I don't consider that a supplement though, it's my breakfast so that makes it food.  Accelrade or Gatorade when riding.  Again, I don't really consider that a supplement, but I guess it is.  I did add Carbo-pro for my 1/2.

I tried Endurolytes during training and didn't feel any real benefit.  I will probably give them another chance next season, I didn't have enough of them to "use as directed".

I just take a multivitamin. Haven't used up all the prenatals I had from when I'm pregnant...so I use those. They have extra iron in them, and that seems to help me keep from getting too tired...at least I think they do.
