Overall Rank = 569/731
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 39/51
Pre-race routine:

We camped out, so it was get a pb&j and take a long walk to the bathroom.
Event warmup:

Ummm, stand in the corral and wait to swim!
Swim
  • 52m 55s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was very nervous waiting for the swim to start, I've never done an OWS without having trouble at the start with breathing and backstroking.

I waded in, got wet and let everyone start swimming and then just started swimming, no panic or breathing issues!!! I was so happy with myself I forgot about not being able to see the turn around! Just concentrated on swimming from one marker to the next.

It was hard to see where to swim because my wave's swim caps were bright orange and the same color as the bouys! augh that was hard to tell where to go.

I got half way out and a swarm of silver caps came over me, I had to stop swimming and just wait for them to pass. That freaked me out. But then I just got back at it and kept on swimming.

I got to the turn around and said a little yippeee to myself and giggled.

I felt like I swam a lot better on the way back, not that I am fast but I felt like I was warmed up and moving a bit faster. I did get swarmed by a bunch of silver caps again but this time I just kept swimming. Someone swam up my back and someone else clubbed me in the head. I swallowed quite a bit of water. It was hard to see on the way back because of the glare on the water. I just kept looking for splashing and followed what I could see.

Most of my left hand went numb on the way back any repetitive motion bothers my wrist after having surgery. It was ok just felt weird and I probably didn't have real good form. My left shoulder was hurting still from the mountain bike wreck, so towards the end my left hand was doing the fingertip drill thing on every other stroke or so.

It was awesome to get to the beach!!! I was so happy with my swim, I wasn't a weenie and actually swam the whole time!!!!!!!
What would you do differently?:

Get faster, get better on holding my space with other swimmers.
Transition 1
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

I was dizzy when I got out of the water, I guess that is why it took 3 minutes. It was a bit from the beach to the bike and then out of the bike area.

Bike
  • 3h 05m
  • 56 miles
  • 18.16 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was rolling hills in the beg and somewhat flatter after about 10 miles or so. I passed tons of people on the bike!

I had some GI issues and stopped at the turn around. I think for the whole race I stopped to potty 4 times. Heck right there I could take off almost 10 minutes :-)

I was happy with the bike and probably could have pushed it a little harder.

It was funny on this long flat, a girl comes up and passes me and says "Good Ride! I've been chasing you for awhile" she is breathing hard (I am not) she pulls in front of me and seems to slow down. For some reason that woke me up and I took off. She tried to keep up with me but couldn't. I didn't see her again until I went through the turn around and saw her a few minutes back.
What would you do differently?:

Push it a little harder.

Got a 4 minute penalty from the lady on the motor cycle....It was hard when you are trying to pass groups of people and not get hit by cars.
Transition 2
  • 03m 5s
Comments:

Took time to apply sunscreen and use porta potty.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 2h 22m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile was tough. My HR was too high and then we started up a hill and I had to walk to try and get things under control. My plan was to run each mile and walk the water stations. I ended up walking for 20 or 30 seconds every once in awhile and I walked some of the hills.

The last few miles the balls of my feet were starting to hurt and my left hip was hurting.
What would you do differently?:

Not walk so much.

Great race!!!

sorry we didn't get to meet up. Although we were in the same wave - orange.

Very nice bike split for you. I thought those hills were relentless. To me, it seemed one after the other for the first 10 miles, then loooooong ups and downs. And the winds were tough too. Seems you did alright though.

Very tough course, but beautiful scenery and very well run race. I'm looking to do it again next year, or at least go up there and train some more.

Congratulations on a great race! Way to go with the swim demons.  It takes a lot to tackle something you know that you have problems doing.   That was a fast bike split.  I guess all those hills you rode really paid off.  Bummer about the penalty but it doesn't sound like you could have done except stop.

Way to go chick.  You and I were close especially on the T2 transition.  Awesome bike.  The start of the run was a little bit of a pain with the dirt part and everything.  I may have swum over you.  Sorry.   Congrates!!

Great report! That sounds like a fun race. I had no idea there was a race at Tupper. I grew up in Upstate NY and if I ever get to the half iron level I may have to go home to camp and do that race. Thanks for the report and congratulations!

Congrats, MA!  This was your first half, right?  Good time and a strong finish, sounds like.  Now if only you'd had some gnarly MTB course with 5k feet of climbing you'd have been in your element!

Congrats MaryAnn.  Great job on the swim.  Funny how my swim last sunday was also in orange caps and orange bouys.  I was trying hard NOT to follow people off course thinking they were bouys.  It is great to see how you conquered the fear!

Super ride passing that girl.    And according to KathyG, something adding some walks in a race may actually be faster.

Great race Mtnchick. Great job on the bike.

Funny how we have the same issues on the swim. Stick with it. That whole "swim lots" thing works.
