I have used Carbo-pro, but I find that I still get hungry for solids bc it is only carbs. I just started using Hammer Perpetuem. I put 10-12 scoops in a water bottle and mix it. I sip it throughout my long workouts with water and it seems to be better than carbo pro. The problem that I found with the carbo pro is that it dissolves in water or gatorade with virtually no taste. You can put about 700 calories in a bottle but you drink it too fast and your body cannot absorb that many calories in a short time.

Here's my cocktail which I supplemented with Uncrustables (portable PB&J sandwiches) and GU:

2 Scoops Carbo Pro
1 Scoop GU20 - Lemon Lime
1 Packet Crystal Light Lemonade or Peach Iced Tea
1 Packet Crystal Light Lemon Electrolyte solution
600 mg sodium
1 Packet Sweet-n-Low

I used this mix in training and then very successfully during IM CDA. I had 2 bottles on my bike and 2 more bottles in SN on the bike. I also carried a ziploc in my jersey with the premixed powder just in case my SN got lost or something.

Most sports drinks have carbs. Just make a Google search and you'll find many with their specific nutritional value. Just drink whatever works for you (or you can stomach) although try to KISS it as most races only offer either G-ade, Heed or something like that

Also *IF* you choose to do one of those crazy cocktails bombs, keep in mind that the more concentrated the liquid is, the longer it will take for your stomach to absorb it and covert it into fuel so unless you are drinking plenty of water with it to dissolve it, the benefits will take longer to take place and that might affect your race.

I'm doing IMKY and plan to use Hammer Perpetuem. I've used it as my main fuel source for HIM's and have been training with it on my long training rides. I also plan to have a PB and honey sandwich every two hours. I take a hammer gel every hour also. Obviously, water with all the above.

I know a couple of folks that have made those highly concentrated bottles then only to race with weird weather like IMWI which was really cold and they ended up just taking in highly concentrated calories and not enough water to dilute it in their stomach and ended up missing a Kona slot by a few minutes after spending 30 minutes in various porta potties on the run.

Easiest is to keep it simple...what is going to be on your course? Try training with that and see how you tolerate it. If it works it is simple...bring some and take new bottles as needed. Plus sports drinks have electrolytes which Cliff bars don't.

I will be using nothing but Infinit and water on the bike in my IM. My stomach hates solid food while exercising. I have tried mixing a concentrated bottle and washing it down with water, but my stomach hated that as well.

I believe that different forms of food (energy) get absorbed at different rates, so it might be usful to mix-up the use of liquids, gels, blocks and bars. I have used this approach in my training and so far so good - no sloshing in the stomach during the run.

Good luck.

A trick I heard at USAT coaching clinic - mix a 4 x concentrated bottle (I use carb pro or perpetium sp?) Mark the bottle in 4ths with lines. Every hour you need to mix 1/4 (you know you are getting the right amt. b/c it is marked) of the concentrate and a fresh bottle of water in your aerobottle. Sip for one hour. If you do 8 scoops of perpetium & the rest water (plus some salt if you are doing IMKY) you should be getting about 220 calories per hour. I know that I need some solid food to aid the digestion so I have a snack mix in my bento box w/ almonds, and gluten free pretzels to munch on. I also plan on carrying one or two bars (I have to do envirokids b/c of the gluten issue) just in case I need another boost.
When I switched to mainly liquid nutrition in my long training (not that I have been doing well with fitting in long training!!) I felt much better!!

Infinit Rocks!! Not expierenced with a full IM yet but did a half yesterday and that stuff works like a champ. Protein in it, and lots of calories. I talked with the owner and founder a while back before I ordered it and he is a expierence IMer and wanted an all in one type drink. You don't need salt pills if you take Infinit, it is all included.

I swear by Hammer Nutrition. Sustained Energy and Perpeteum both have the right carb-to-protein mixture. Perp is loaded with electrolytes, SE is not so you would need to have an electrolyte supplement with you. Both can be flavored with their gels so you can vary the flavor (I wish I had done this during IMFL).

Check out their website

http://www.e-caps.com/

They have a ton of info on their products, what's in them and how to use them. All their products use only complex carbs which burn more steadily (no sugar high or crash) and tend to keep you from having gastrointestinal issues.

Despite what it may seem like I do NOT work for Hammer or have any financial interest in the company.

Gatorade Endurence, gels and water. It's what you will be given on the course, why not make that your plan?

Plus hammer stuff is gluten free for those of us that have celiac . . . I will not be having anything from the course b/c of that - it's not worth risking stomach problems!!

I'm a big Infinit Nutrition fan. If you find yourself formulating your own mixture, then why not be assured the mix is consistent and complete and let someone else mix it for you? The nice thing there is you can run some calculations based on your body weight, fat percent, etc. and make exactly the mix your body needs.

My long distance mix is a custom Infinit blend with almost all the carbs, electrolytes and protein I need based on my body comp. I make up the rest with about 1 gel every 2 hours. That's just my preference to have a little bit of semi-solid food go down for the psychologic factor.

I know a number of people like the Hammer products. I like most of their stuff, but I found that Perpetuem doesn't hold up well on long hot days. At CDA last year when it hit 95-100 many people had an unpleasant suprise in their special needs bags when that mix broke down in the heat. Also Perpetuem may not be good unless you're really adjusted to soy protein. (Just my $0.02 I know it works for some people)

My IM is a year away (CDA) and I have made this switch. I will be racing my September HIM with this very plan. I will have to pack my own for the half though.

Two Ironman races pretty much living off the course.

For both IMLP and IMAZ I left T1 with NO bottles on my bike. At the aid stations, I picked up a bottle of Gatorade Endurance and drank 8 ounces of it every 10 minutes. The aid stations are close enough that I only needed 1 bottle at a time. That gave me 1.5 L of fluids and 300 calories per hour. I ate a couple of Clif Shot Bloks per hour for a few extra calories.

Continued living off the course on the run taking whatever I felt like at the time....usually 1 cup of broth and 1 cup of Coke. Bizarre combination, but it worked wonders.
