I want to spend no more than 3k including pedals/shoes/cages/taxes... I have a road bike and don't want to be taking my pedals on and off all the time. So my question is what setup would be ideal for me. I'd like a decent bike.. don't need Dura Ace components.... What bikes. cervelo p2sl? What are decent pedals/shoes combo I really don't want to spend 500 on shoes and pedals again...

oh yeah.. i have ksyrium es wheels so should i just get the bike without wheels?

Allow me to put my plug in for Orbea...

My wife has been riding an Orbea for a couple years and loves it. Finally convinced me to get one and I too have nothing but good things to say.

The Orbea Ora Limited is just under $3k, probably $2799. It comes with a mix of dura-ace, ultegra and 105 components. The frame is the best part, as it's has the same aerodynamics as the Ordu, an elite level bike.

It's also not something you see a lot of, and they are really sharp looking...

Please don't get upset at my directness:

Go get the best fit you can from a fist certified fitter that has lots of experience fitting triathletes, THEN go take the measurements derived from the fit and go shopping. Don't make a $3K mistake by buying eye candy that doesn't fit you right! PM me if you want to discuss this process.

Btw, for $3K and a little work, i put together a bike that has a replacement value well over $7K

There are lots of bikes that fit your price range.

My suggestion is to visit all the big bike stores in your area, pick their brains, see how they operate, ask them about bike fitting, talk to other triathletes in your area, get a bike fit, test ride as many bikes as you can. Living in CA there are lots of bike shops geared towards triathletes I think many many in San Diego area...may be worth a drive.

Buy the bike that fits you best that you can afford.

The rub comes in if you like a bike at one store, but have your fit done someplace else. Give 10 folks measurements to set up a bike you'll have 10 different set ups...atleast that is what happened to me. I have a bike fit guy that has a little shop and didn't want to buy any of the bike brands he sells. But he is an awesome fitter. I ended up buying my bike at the shop that supports my tri club as I get a nice discount. They set up the bike supposed to be like my other one, bought the bike, brought it to the bike fit guy...seat height isn't even right. I need a new stem & seat post to get it close. Now that I ride it in road position it is to long and low for me. $1800 on a bike that doesn't fit and I should have known better.

Shoes/ pedals you can buy later. I had one pair of pedals for awhile and just left them on the bike I rode all the time. I found a nice deal and picked them up then within a couple months. Performance Bike has them inexpensive and usually has a coupon plus if you are a member you get 10% rebate back for future purchases.

At $3k, you will get a nice bike.  Like others said, invest the time to find a good fitter that can help you narrow your choices down.

No need to get fancy with the pedals.  Pick the platform you like (look, speedplay, etc.) and choose a mid-line set.  And shoes just need to fit.

P2SL's are about $1700 at my local Trek shop.  That would seem to fit your budget quite nicely. There are deals to be had out there!

I went out and got fit on a P2C. It's being "built" now. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow about 2pm I think I got a pretty decent deal. $3400.00 with all the goodies I wanted to go with it (pedals/shoes/hydro tail/cages). I knew I was going to spend more than I budgeted for. but oh well.. the bike is gonna kick .. Now I just need to swim better! I swear I'm gonna have to go to more of my club events.. I saved some decent cash by joining.... I'll post up some pics tomorrow...

Yikes man. I got all that stuff with my P2C for $2800 out the door. can you compare with other shops to make sure that's THE BEST deal you can get?

But... you DID get a sweet bike! there's no question about that.

so how do the wheels look? notice in the background the road bike with no wheels .. here is how the hydro tail is attached... no it hasn't launched any bottles.. the cages are pretty tight. today i did a very unofficial TT and it was 10 miles... I rode 25 miles to get there and i ended up doing 23.0mph on my TT. I may have been able to do better if my um.... taint wasn't in so much pain... i'm gonna need to get the saddle adjusted or a new saddle.. ouch...

My 56 mile ride killed my taint yesterday.... so i went back to the shop and swapped the stock seat for a Profile Design Tri-Stryke Saddle. It instantly felt better. I'll post up later after a few rides with the new seat.... man that cervelo stock seat was torture!

The ol' Tri Strike is a "taint saver" for sure.... heavier than my stock saddle, but I don't care.

BTW - I also lowered the nose a couple mm too. Feels a little wierd when I'm not in aero - feels like I might slip off the front (not realy) but is so comfy in aero.

Nice bike too - that's the one I am looking at very seriously - unless I can pull the trigger on the P3.
