Overall Rank = 139/224
Age Group = 20-24
Age Group Rank = 3/
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and decided, despite the scromboid, I was okay to race. Ate a piece of whole wheat bread with peanut butter and drink a cup of coffee. Drove the hour to the race site with Alkaline Trio playing as loud as possible. Got to the race with about two hours to spare (yeah, about that.)
Event warmup:

Warmup? What warmup? ;)
Swim
  • 38m 21s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

My first OWS in a racing capacity. My goal was really just to take it easy, not freak out, and make it through the swim without being drowned. I accomplished all of the above. The worst part was when the wave behind us (most of the non-elite males and clydesdales) literally swam OVER me. Don't worry, I kicked back. ;)
What would you do differently?:

I have a lot of work to do on my swim stroke itself and sighting, but given the current level of my swim, I didn't this this was half bad.
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Managed to run to transition and remove cap/goggles and get my top half off by the time I hit the rack my bike was on.
What would you do differently?:

Get my suit off my heels better. Not have to run AROUND the rack to get my helmet that had fallen off my handlebars.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 24s
  • 24 miles
  • 18.85 mile/hr
Comments:

From the first mile, my legs were already aching, due to workouts the previous days. Despite this, every lap got better and better. I played cat-and-mouse with a 20 year old for most of the bike. She ended up right in front of me at the end of the bike, but I beat her out of T2 and never saw her again.
What would you do differently?:

If I really wanted to race this? Taper. Not hammer on the bike on the days leading up to the race. I also failed with the nutrition- I only took in one Gu and about 1/4 of the sports drink I wanted to take in. My splash guard came out of my aero bottle when I went over one of the speedbumps on the intital path out of transition, so water splashed on me every time I went over a bump or pothole. Therefore I don't really know how much water I drank.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

To get to the transition area off of the bike, we had to run over this wooded area with wood chips under foot. At this point, my legs weren't holding up so well, so I almost rolled my ankles mutiples times trying to get across the wood chips to transition.
What would you do differently?:

The actual transition was good, I would just try not to hobble so much on my way there.
Run
  • 58m 28s
  • 6.5 miles
  • 08m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

I actually drank the right amount on a run and my stomach tolerated it- breakthrough! I think I could have pushed the pace a bit from the beginning of the run, but didn't know what my body was capable of running in a triathlon.
What would you do differently?:

Um...run faster?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with Jorge. Ate ice cream. You know, the usual.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1. scromboid posioning
2. lack of experience
3. lack of taper

Event comments:

Can I do this again tomorrow? ;)

Whoohoo!  Great job at the race.  The Walden swims are useful!!

Those are some fast bike and run paces!

Perhaps you should go with the Scromboid for all races, it seems like it might have worked. I would agree though that you should skip the hammering back rides the day or two before the race....just a thought. Great job despite all of the set backs! I'm expecting big things from you when you have your A race!

Congratulations... you rocked it!  I'm so proud of you I could pop .  I can't wait to see what you do next weekend with shorter distances and hopefully without scromboid poisoning!

Where can I buy scromboid-flavored GU? Clearly, we're on to something here. (If nothing else, "scromboid-flavored GU" is fun to say.)

I know this might possibly be a hair premature, but clearly, you should scrap all your silly "get my graduate degree and spend my life improving the lives of others" idea and become a triathlete full time. Leave the whole "save the world" thing to people who can't rock a 19mph average in their first race.

That's my suggestion, anyway.
