Pre-race routine:

I had a later start so I didn't wake up until 5:45. Ate wheat toast with peanut butter and a banana. Washed it all down with a cold Coke Zero to get some cafeine. Because of the later start I got to stop at Starbucks for another shot of cafeine. Got to the race at 6:15 and my wave wouldn't go off until 8:30. Slowly finished my coffee as I set up my transition area. I like to be right at the Bike Out / Bike In area so I don't have to push my bike far and there was almost a full rack right there. I had 2 pros set up right beside me and I was drooling over their bikes.

Event warmup:

Once I was set up I just walked around a bit then started stretching everything out. I grabbed my iPod and cranked my music to get me ready and went for a short 7 minute jog. After that I grabbed my swim stuff and went for a 300m swim. Glad I did because I found out in a hurry there were going to be weeds the first and last 100m or so. I HATE weeds. Heart rate felt a little high during swim so I actually went back in the water a 2nd time after coming out for 20 minutes. This time my heart rate was good as I was more relaxed and had a much longer stroke.
Swim

Comments:

Not a bad swim for me. This is usually my worst part of the race but I felt like I got into a rythm after the first turn. My breathing was good. I couldn't find someone to draft off no matter what I tried so I just tried to find some open water and go. I probably could've gone harder but I was so bad at my last race that I just wanted to get into a good rythm. I was happy with my time when I got out of the water even though it wasn't blazing fast, I came to T1 within my projected time allocation.
What would you do differently?:

I wish I could've found someone to draft behind but I'm happy with the end result. I probably could've gone harder, especially the last 200m or so.
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

It was about a 300m run from the swim to transition. At least it was all on grass so it wasnt hard onthe feet. I don't wear socks for a Sprint so I just through on my bike shoes, helmet, and sunglasses and off I went. Even the pros only beat my T1 by 19-20 seconds which I'm sure was partially made up on the run to T1 and by having their shoes clipped on their bikes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, pretty good transition except for the strap on the helmet. That didn't cost me more than 5 seconds though.
Bike
  • 29m 59s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 22.41 mile/hr
Comments:

Actually more of a hilly course than I thought. One real tough hill after a sharp right turn. You lost all momentum and if you were in the wrong gear you'd have a hard time getting up that hill. Some had to get off their bikes and walk because they were caught in the wrong gear. I had to stand up to get up the hill but once over that it was smooth sailing.

I passed an awful lot of fast bikes on my bike. Makes me just want to grab their bikes so I can go even faster. :-)
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Got my feet out of my shoes on the bike a little early because the dismount line was further than I thought it was. It didn't cost me a lot of time as my transition time was fast. Happy with T2.
Run
  • 21m 9s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Very unhappy with this run. My pace was way to slow and I should've been able to go faster. I did take it a little easier towards the end as I was thinking about next weeks race. This tells me I need to do some more speed work. I've been focusing on my HIM training and it hurt my Sprint today. Last time I did this exact same run route I did it at a 6:13 pace. Not happy at all with the run.
What would you do differently?:

Speed training for shorter distances even though I'm focusing on HIM.
Post race
Warm down:

Coke, pizza and just hung out for a little while. Stretched a little and then stayed for the awards ceremony since I did at least come 1st in the Individual division.

Event comments:

This was a fun race and it was good to see so many couples out. I tried to get my wife out but she just hasn't been able to train as much as she'd like. She'll do it with me next year.
