Subject: Am I overtrained, and what to do?
I've been training since the beginning of April. I'm an experienced XC runner and swimmer, my old 5k times were about 20 minutes or so.

I Usually take a day or 2 off a week.

This week I took Sat off, Sun off, on Monday I did a 15 mile bike ride, immediately into a 3 mile run and later in the day I did an easy swim for an hour. Tuesday was 30 minutes sprint speedwork on foot, and wednesday was a 3 mile interval run. Thursday I took off, and today I did 3 miles nearly as fast as I could. It took a whopping 22 minutes. I sleep about 9 hours a night, and don't really feel fatigued during the day, but I'm also 17.

My triathlon (Sprint) is on the 28th, am I overtrained, and what should next weeks schedule look like?

Sounds like all workout days are hard workouts. If so you really need to break that up with some easier days, not off days really just easy-moderate days.

As someone who never has a day "off", unless I mess up a recovery run by going to quick and start to feel tired days alter, I stick to two hard workouts a week then a moderate day or 2. The rest of my workouts are fairly easy. Or atleast that's the plan but I do do some easy days too hard but I pay the price later.

Do your hard days hard
do your easy days EASY

Rest is the cure for overtraining.

As to whether you are overtrained or not, without more information its imposible to tell.  You may just have had a bad day when you did your 3 miles.

Without seeing anything in your logs it's hard to say.  I wouldn't necessarily say you are overtrained, but you might be overworking yourself.   Your workouts the past few days seem to be at a high level, where you are continuously pushing yourself.  Do you always work out at your limits, or did you first work on building a good base when you started your training in April?

Just because you have a slower run does not mean you are "overtrained."

Overtraining is denoted by fatigue, inability to elevate your heart rate, and slow recovery, none of which you are describing.

There can be any number of factors that cause a slower run.  Time of day, weather, what you ate for breakfast/lunch/dinner, your workout the day before, etc.

Next week I would recommend devoting one day to each discipline doing low intensity short workouts mixed with a few strides for running, sign sprints for cycling, and 25 yard sprints in the pool.  Not enough to cause fatigue, but enough to "excite" the fast twitch muscle fibers adn get them ready.  Then two complete days of rest before the race.

But that's just me .......

Morning resting heart rate is a way to tell.  You need to have  a base line though.  If you are overtraining you may see that rise.  The body is working hard to repair the damage done by overtraining.

Personally when i got a little crazy mine went from 42bpm to 55pbm.  I felt slightly depressed.  Look through the article there is some stuff on it.

Have at it,

Hey I'm seventeen as well and a cross country runner. Pretty cool....

I don't think it is because you are over training, I think you just need longer distance runs. Take a couple times each week and run for 50-60min. If you do that plus a speed workout, you'll have a lot more endurance and will be racing alot faster when your race comes around. IF your an experienced XC runner, than you should be able to handle the longer runs.
