After watching the tris on OLN, I have a question for you guys out there. Why are the men's pros all dressed so differently? For example, why would Hunter Kemper wear that short little singlet or whatever you call his top. Wouldn't a longer one provide better sun protection?

I thought he looked ridiculous, frankly, in a field of very nice male tri hottness.

Personal preference. Whatever you feel most comfortable in.

A bare midriff helps you feel a bit cooler, which might be the psychological lift that Hunter Kemper needs to run his best.

I know in my last tri, I started getting really warm on the run, and hiked up my top, and it felt like it made a difference. Sure I probably looked like a goof, but mentally, it helped.

It looks like a sports bra to me... I would feel more comfortable not looking like a crossdresser, but that's just me. I suppose you gotta wear something if you are sponsered, but with the fabric technology today, I am sure you can be cooler with something covering your stomach... maybe he is trying to pick up chicks with his 6-pack

Coredump, I'm sure you looked very athletic and handsome! But I agree, the top looked like a man-ssiere to me aphoric.

Okay, I'll stop before the bear starts in on how it is a race, not a pageant. I agree, but if I'm watching it on TV, I get to judge eye candy!

Aikane,
I'm totally with you on that half-shirt look. Not good. I have said nothing but derogatory things about that particular look, just because I can.

I also read somewhere that participants have to always have their torsos covered. Is this true? I haven't seen a shirtless man (or woman) in any of my races, but I've seen pics online of shirtless triathletes in a race. Anyone know?

Haha, that's just because "The Bro is too ethnic!"

THere are a few guys on the St. Croix half IM now that are wearing them too, no wetsuits and no tops for the guys in the water, so I am not sure about any bare torso rule...

First tri: I lost 40 seconds or so struggling to get my top on after the swim. Noticed that 75% of the men remained topless.

Second tri: left the top at home (on purpose). Became one of the 75%ers.

Maybe it's just a Cajun thang?

As far as I know, ITU and/or USAT events require elite athletes (maybe amateurs as well) some sort of torso coverage, although those tops (ie. Kempers) we so terrible looking, may as well have been topless!

I forget which organization it is, but I know I read about it somewhere. Weird!

I'm all for equal rights. Women should be allowed  encouraged to compete topless as well.

That's exactly what my husband and I said. "Oh look, there's the guy in the red sport's bra again." Maybe he was trying to control the bounciness of his boobies.

What next? Thong Speedos? Men in string bikini tops?

Plus, if a dude's gonna go around in a sport's bra, he should at least have a tan. :-O

Elaine,

Is this your tri outfit?  Swashbuckle boots and a pirate hat, bet you have lots of followers.  Speaking of tan lines....

Nobody knows. I'm not even sure why Hunter does. It might have something to do with attention. If it weren't for his stupid outfit, I wouldn't know who he is.

At ST, I asked why would Nike even make that ... and a Nike rep responded that they wouldn't wear it, but they make whatever clothes the athletes pay for. He wanted a man-bra, he got a man-bra.

All the tri's I have done require that everyone wear a top no matter how hot it is.  I get so hot during the running leg that I roll up my jersey to cool off.  Maybe I should in invest in one of those short singlets...who cares what I look like!?!

I HATE wearing a regular shirt when I run.  I much prefer wearing just a sports bra.  Why?  Well, as I run, the fabric of the shirt twists around on my stomach and irritates me.  It's completely unnecessary.  I can't see how it would be any different for a man.

And yes, that extra fabric DOES make it hotter.

Also, I imagine that women's lack of nipple chafing has something to do with a very secure top that doesn't move.  Wouldn't one of those little tops for men ("bros" if you will) provide the same benefit?  I mean, this is assuming that he has to wear some sort of shirt.

Shoot, guys, most of you are already shaving your body hair!  Are you really in a position to make fun of a guy wearing a bro? ;-)

At the Mussleman HalfIM in NY, my wife stood by the finish line waiting to catch a look at the winning racers. Over the loudspeaker, the race announcer excitedly reported, "Ladies and gentleman, here comes one of the leaders now....Wow, it's a female, this has got to be some sort of record!!!!" Several seconds later as the racer approached, the announcer realized his mistake and anounced that the athlete was one of the elite men. My wife said that everyone felt bad for the man who was mistaken as a woman, and to this day she wonders why he was wearing that bannana hammock and bro.

I completely agree about the 1/2 top sports bra looking thing that Hunter was wearing. There has to be really nice fabrics to choose from in a sleeveless top that would be just as cool, comfortable, and much more appealing. My first tri this summer I saw a few guys in that kind of 1/2 shirt and I started to think they were a gay couple... turns out they lost a bet and had to wear them.

No, that's for the post-race celebration. I haven't found a way to attach cleats to the knee-high high-heeled pirate boots. And the eye patch messes with my depth perception while on the bike.

My first tri is on Oct. 17. I found a pirate hat at the local halloween store that will probably fit well over my running hat. I just may wear it for the race.

In the new issue of either Triathlete Mag or Inside Triathlon, they have the 2 page action shots in the beginning and there's one with a couple of people diving into some waves. I looking at it thinking "Geez, that woman has some serious back muscles." Then I read the caption. No lady, it was Hunter in his bro...

Shirtless saves me bunches of time in transition. Wet bodies and any shirt just dont mix it all sticks and is a pain to get on. I've considered the 'tri-suit', tried them on but those just dont fit my frame well and the Zoot top they both looked ridiculous. For thinner guys I think maybe ten pounds from now.

LOL! Exactly!!!!

As one who overheats veeeeery easily, I think I can see where the bro comes from. However, because my belly is not exactly the most fat-free thing you've ever seen, I usually run with a shirt on no matter how hot. I think if I were a guy, I'd be even more put-off by wearing a bro. But whatever, to each his own! By that I mean, I'm fully allowed to giggle at him....
