In regards to bug repellant....from the CDC web site.

Q. How does the percentage of active ingredient in a product relate to the amount of protection it gives?
A.
Typically, the more active ingredient a product contains the longer it provides protection from mosquito bites. The concentration of different active ingredients cannot be directly compared (that is, 10% concentration of one product doesn’t mean it works exactly the same as 10% concentration of another product.)

DEET is an effective active ingredient found in many repellent products and in a variety of formulations. Based on a 2002 study (Fradin and Day, 2002. See Publications page.):

• A product containing 23.8% DEET provided an average of 5 hours of protection from mosquito bites.
• A product containing 20% DEET provided almost 4 hours of protection
• A product with 6.65% DEET provided almost 2 hours of protection
• Products with 4.75% DEET were both able to provide roughly 1 and a half hour of protection.

These examples represent results from only one study and are only included to provide a general idea of how such products may work. Actual protection will vary widely based on conditions such as temperature, perspiration, and water exposure.

Choose a repellent that provides protection for the amount of time that you will be outdoors. A product with a higher percentage of active ingredient is a good choice if you will be outdoors for several hours while a product with a lower concentration can be used if time outdoors will be limited. Simply re-apply repellent (following label instructions) if you are outdoors for a longer time than expected and start to be bitten by mosquitoes.

Im hoping on the bike it wont be an issue...but the run...ugh...especially those of us who might be running (slowly) thru the night...20% DEET  lasting 4 hrs...Im assuming that is a lot less when sweating.

btw - I was watching the IMWI coverage from last year and noticed it looked like people were standing, not treading in the water,

Anyone know how far out you can walk before treading is needed?

What is up with the banquet?  I remember last year people had to buy tickets for family members, etc, but I'm not sure because I snuck in (ducks head in shame).  Anyone hear anything about this?

Remember folks, he's 6'8" - ratio factor in play here!

I forgot my tape measure this morning, but I think I was at least 15 to 20 feet out or so from the ramp when the water was up to my chest (being 6'2" ).

Chris - I know you aren't going to walk this swim course like I heard you did at Devil's Lake.

When I raced last week, as long as I was running, the skeeters weren't bothering me. The moment I stopped - blammo! If you're run/walking (and who doesn't in an Ironman?) you'll need the spray for the walking parts.

As for standing instead of treading water for the start, I'm not sure how far out the start actually is, but I know that at 5'7", I can't really get all that far out from that ramp before I'm more comfortable swimming than standing.

I would never walk to the line- that is not why I trained (evil thought in head remembers a 1:30/100 pace while walking - thought gone now!)

Just got the packet pickup!  It's getting busy at the Terrace, and parking/traffic is horrendous and not fun.  BE CAREFUL AND PATIENT!

Procedure for packet pickup is very organized, but be prepared for busy times.

One thing that will be done at packet pickup is getting a silver, reflective wristband to wear (participants, not volunteers) and you will need to put it on and wear it until Monday.

At the Information booth outside is a very nice, glossy pamphlet "Getting Around On Race Day.  Traffic Alterations for the 2007 Ford Ironman Wisconsin".  It's nicer than the PDF that you can print on the IMWI website.

Getting closer folks!  Taking deep breaths here to try and calm down.

Cheers!

Geez, chill out!  Your wasting valuable energy   I pulled into town at 2:45 PM, traffic wasn't horrendous and easily found a public parking garage a block away from Monona Terrace and had no problem finding a parking spot.  A short walk to packet pickup and then saw Heather Fuhr and Paula Newby-Fraser as I was waiting in a very short line.  A good omen. Then went for a swim for one lap around the course.

I'll be down there about 7:00am also.  I'm 6'1" - I'll have on a BT t-shirt when I arrive and leave, and a Blue Seventy Reaction full wetsuit and a orange "Mountain Man Triathlon" swim cap while swimming.

I'll see those of you in the morning that will be down at the swim, and the rest at the banquet (and mandatory meeting).

As of last check all weather forecasts for Sunday call for morning lows in the upper 50s, with highs in the mid-70s and partly to mostly sunny skies with a slight breeze, and max gusts of 10-15 mph.

Knock on wood - it sounds like a perfect day for an Ironman!!!

- Tim

I made it in to town a bit late, but went down to the Terrace area and checked it out. I will try to meet up for the 8am swim. Are you getting in the water to the left of the Terrace (looking at the water)?

Yup.  The same place we will enter the water on Sunday.

The best way to get there may be through Monona Terrace - down the stairs or elevator to lake level then walk down to the Gatorade tents.  They will watch your gear/clothes while you swim, and they are handing out their product of course.

I'm going to head on down there by 7:30 / 45 am. Looks like most of the rain is through. Although it is saying thunderstorms could develop after 10:00 am. Probably better to get the swim in now.
