I saw that video the other day, and it is amazing! I still can't believe I survived the many drowning attempts to end my life. Or the body blows and pulling

I am thankful that a few serious years in hand-to-hand combat training actually had a cross-over effect into triathlon.

You'll be fine.......and you'll love it!

Of course we cannot ignore this technique for training. A classic.

Bonus! A little grappling and cage fighting cross training on your off days will take care of it

I swam the buoy line for about 90% of the race (though barely used it for navigating).  There's some bumping and such.  And I did take one glancing blow to the cheek when I wasn't paying attention.  But if you stay calm and relaxed, you can have a very fast swim at LP even with all the rough-housing.

I made the mistake of staying to the outside and I think that my swim time was a bit slow bc of it. Next time I do it, I will get right in th ethick of things.

If you dont want to get involved in all the people, you can go all the way to the right and stay away from the line. You will start to feel the crowd as you approach the turnaround. Dont get me wrong, I did take a swift right to the jaw at one point but all in all it wasnt bad.

Subject: swim strategy question
I know I have 12 months to ponder this But I am asking now anyway...
I am a slow swimmer and will be spending a ton of time in the pool and lake between now and IMLP 2008. Stategy wise...I am wondering if hanging back and starting way to the right is the way to go...OR...Hang back even longer and try to grab a spot on the cable line after the majority of athletes have taken off. I know I will be lapped either way, but being on the cable I might get crushed as the speedsters swim by.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I really mean it when I say I am slow..like 45 min in a Half IM swim. I am a decent cyclist and a more decent runner so it all sort of balances out... But I have a boatload of training to do!

45 per lap is not bad at all, and in fact you will probably be in a group of swimmers going at that rate. The question about trying to get the line is a whole different ballgame and I think it has to do with your confidence in the water. The swim is not hard and there are not many truns so not getting on the line shouldnt be bad, and it will def be a little safer. When I went up there for training I actually did not look at the line and praticed sighting land marks bc I did not want to fight for it during the race.

I started near the back, and stayed about 25 feet away from the buoys at all times and to be honest, I had a pretty uneventful swim.  Once in a while someone would bump me a bit, I'd renavigate, choose a slightly different line and be fine for another 10 minutes.  Of the 3 Ironman swims I've done in that lake, this one was by far the easiest.  I'm no lightning fast swimmer, around 1:30 for the IM.

Scout...I'm in the same boat and yes I signed up, but I'm slower than you. I have just thought of standing and waiting and letting everyone go...hey what is 2-3 minutes in the whole day. My goal would be to finish first lap before the fastest folks come up behind me.

Me, the pool, lots of time this winter too. Sad thing is I swam 3x a week all winter, took specific tri swim lessons and got slower. I need to have this winter be different.

Cool video - thanks! I was right in the middle of that tangle, as I was just off the dock for the start. I'll be showing that one to friends and family.

Of the three disciplines, swimming is the only one I am OK at (I must have heard "on your left" 1500 times on Sunday). So I kinda like to get right in the middle of things and join all of the wire swimmers/wrestlers, because it's a lonely day after that! My experience was like Type A's...nothing malicious going on, but lots of body contact throughout the whole swim.

I am a big fan of the Seal Mask for IM swims. I took a lot of heels to the face, and the Seal Mask does a good job of distributing the force around your cheekbones and forehead. I can only imagine how a kick to the eye feels when wearing Swedes!

I had pretty much the same experience.. wasn't nearly as bad as I thought swimming just a few feet off the buoy line. The only time I got a little beat up, but still not badly, was when I got right on the line on the second loop. Worst I got was a couple of grabs on the legs- nothing to the head at all. For reference, I came in at about 1:10.

I've never swum the LP course, but based my experience at Wisconsin last year I think it looks worse than it actually is. Just hang to the back a bit and you will be fine!

I got cocky on my 2nd IMLP swim and started right at the line under the starter. I have made some big mistakes in my life but that is about the biggest.

I am a 1:10-1:15 IM swimmer and I was run over like I was standing still. Three people literally swam over me like I was water.

In my humble opinion do not get near that inside line unless you are going sub 1:00 for the swim.

On the other hand starting at the line at the far right near shore is great, clear water almost all the way to the first corner. Based on my time from there I dont think its more then 100 yards longer.

Have fun

Chris

It is exactly like the video but overall if you remain calm you can have a very good swim. I started right about 75y back and headed left at midpoint. There is open water once in while and the hits are not too bad for the most part. The important thing is to remain calm and focused.

swim time: 1:15

I remember hearing back in 2005 that there was a dive start off a dock at 5sec intervals. Am I totally wrong?

I was terrified of this swim but I have to say it was fun! What I dislike about swimming is the isolation, so was not the case here, and the divers under the water, something to look at anyway. I intended to start way to the right but found that I kept getting pulled into the buoy line by the giant draft so finally I just stayed there. Keep your head down, claim your space and bring your sense of humor.

Honestly the start wasn't the problem, it was just the other 4000 yards of the swim Yell

I was expecting to go sub 1:10, but went 1:14.  It was a slow start from where I was (about 10-15 feet off the main dock, about even with the back of the dock, parallel to the swim start flag).  It was getting beat up for the rest of the swim and the grabbing and punching that occurred.  I was swimming around all men, based on their swim cap color and they just wouldn't leave me alone.  Now I expected contact, especially based on my projected swim time, but it was just ridiculous.  There was a level of intentialness in some of the actions of those around me that I couldn't have been prepared for.  So there will be lots of ocean swim races for me for the rest of the summer and I will be hitting the pool hard for the rest of the year and early next year when I won't be biking much- I want to be able to start more towards the front, prepared to better sprint away from the crowd in the beginning (that was the plan this year but it was just too crowded).

Not at Lake Placid. It was a mass water start then too.

in some paperwork that we received after registering, it did say that there was to be three "flag lines": the first line for those projecting a sub 1-hr swim, the second for those at 1:10, and then the third for the rest of the swimmers. The flags were not up on race morning - maybe the RD will have them up next year, or maybe he changed his mind completely layer on.Like road races though, I believe many people would disregard the flags like they would do the corrals anyways.
