Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:45AM for Rob to pick me up at 4:30AM (altho he showed up about 20 mins early!); packed everything the night before... good; had oatmeal w soy milk and made whole wheat bagel w peanut butter & power bars to go; got to transition by 4:30AM & had plenty of time to set up and claim space; found many former TNT teammates & coaches around; walked to store for water afterwards
Event warmup:

After set up closing, walked to swim start; put on contacts; hit bathrooms (crazy lines); found Tutu & Rob's family & Tania... really great to have supporters there!!!; short jog to get blood flowing; power bar about 45 mins before race; energy gel about 15 mins before race; watched other racers for strategy ideas
Swim
  • 25m 32s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 42s / 100 meters
Comments:

Bad swim! OK swim performance, but poor swim strategy that messed everything up... before getting into water, i decided that i would swim to the inside, sacrificing some current for more space and less people around me... bad idea! After approx 200 yards, the entire pack had left me! I swam out to the right side of lane for more current and caught up to back of pack after a short while; swam some of it down there and then cut back over to wall when next wave started to catch up; swallowed much too much water and almost threw up at one point; feet touched bottom a few times towards end of course... disgusting; water last few hundred yards was pitch black... couldn't see hand pass in front of face
What would you do differently?:

Make better use of current!!! Swim on outside of lane towards center of river and don't worry so much about being run over by everyone else!; more open water swimming practice and more group swimming practice
Transition 1
  • 07m 33s
Comments:

Time looks to be about average, maybe on long side; T1 included approx 200 yard run (jog) to transition area barefoot; shirt got very stuck on my back!
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to get my shirt on without it getting stuck!
Bike
  • 1h 31m 12s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Was pretty cool to be riding on West Side Highway! Winds felt strong, but maybe was just me!; felt good on the hills; felt good on ride overall
Transition 2
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

Average; legs were beat after bike!; elastic laces worked well
Run
  • 56m 32s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was not good; felt ok coming off of bike, but legs cramped up horribly going up hills; cramped up to the point that i couldn't walk on Harlem Hill and had to stop and stretch and rest for about a min; someone who saw me and i caught up w later gave me electrolyte pills; not enough water on course, and not where it was published that it would be, likely playing into my cramping!!!!
What would you do differently?:

I don't know! Leg cramping definitely seemed to be caused by hills and not sure what to do to avoid it... practice more BRicks?
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching; looking for family; cheering on other racers; massage at massage tent (was ok)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor swim strategy and leg cramping on runs on hills

FYI I thought the winds were strong also, especially going uptown. Did you feel a big difference in the current by being closer to the edge?
