To be honest, Leona, I think your best bet is going to be counting calories. I did the South Beach for several months and lost quite a bit of weight but, as I picked up my level of exercise, I really began to feel the lack of carbs! And, as soon as I added them back in (the right carbs) my performance increased as did my recovery time.

That's my .02...

Best of luck,
Rob

Leona, I have to agree with MB.  A slight reduction in calories is probably going to be the way to go.  Radically cutting your carbs will make you feel cruddy and affect your performance, radically cutting your protien will affect your recovery and performance.  And just plain not eating enough calories will make your feel cruddy, affect your recovery AND hinder your performance!  So the trick is to get just enough to eat without overdoing it.

Try eating small meals 5 times per day.  Make sure you get a good mix of carbs, protein, fat.  Don't cut way back on carbs.  Eat a good solid breakfast, it'll help you keep going for the first 1/2 of the day.  Without breakfast, you tend to "binge eat" at lunch and dinner, overdoing things.  Your glycogen stores are depleted in the morning, after having gone all night without eating.  Priority #1 is to top them off in the morning.  Stick with more complex carbs, like brown rice, whole grain breads and cereal, etc.  Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.  Use common sense and it won't be necessary to follow any sort of regimented diet.

I have found that eating as natural as possible; fruits, veggies, grains, and lean protein has helped my recovery from my increase in training for triathlons.  I have cut down on, for the most part, preservatives, trans fats, sweetener, caffeine and a whole host of the "typical" american diet foods.  I am not perfect at it, but my overall health has really improved without the coffee, chips, fries, cakes and sweets and all of the other junk I used to eat daily.

I  start with a shake in the mornings made of organic fruits, soy milk, soy protein mix and ice.  It is very tasty.  Drinking the shake in the morning seems to keep me on the healthy eating habit throughout the day.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Mollie

Hi Leona,

Starting this time last year I began the Atkins plan and lost 30 lbs through Jan. 04. I was in the gym some but not working out anything like I have this summer. The big thing was not the weight loss but how good I felt. I had more energy to exercise and slept noticeably better immediately. However,a tri is a cat of a different color. It has taken me all summer to slowly come around to realizing the good carbs do not hurt you and in fact are quite needed. Someone has already mentioned lean protein and veggies of all types. That is basically what I eat and supplement with Hammer gel and H.E.E.D (sports energy drink) both from Hammer Nutrition. I will use longer distance fuels next year when I begin OL tri's.

Simply reducing your calories and exercising more will do wonders. A little trick I learned was to eat something small, about 100-200 calories within 1-hour of waking up. This gets your metabolism going earlier in the day to burn more calories. As mentioned above, eating 5 smaller meals throughout the day will greatly help.

Imagine a hunger scale from 1 to 5 with 1 being starved and 5 being stuffed. You want to maintain a 3-4 feeling throughout the day. You can only do this by eating frequent small meals and snacks. A good number to remember is 100 calories should get you through 1 hour.

I've been doing the Weight Watchers diet since March. It's basically counting calories (points) and eating a balanced meal. I've lost 42lbs! And i feel really good.

Good luck!
