Other than popping an aleve what do you guys recommend to help alleviate soreness in my quads after training. I stretch plenty before and after but usually cannot work out the soreness. I occasionally chill in my neighbors hot tub, but that isn't an option every single time. Ice packs only seem to give me temporary relief. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ice bath after workouts (the sooner, the better), stretching, and massage (either use a foam roller or The Stick).

I found all the above works (ice, heat, hot tub/ bath/ shower, stretching), however, I like natural products. I'm not one for "drugs", so I take Muscle Recovery. It's for the relief of muscle and joint pain and inflammation. I love it! I really notice it, when I've forgotten to take it!

You shouldn’t be taking Aleve, Tylenol, Advil, Excedrin, etc anytime you are sore. (But I’ll let the MDs on the forum explain why). If you are sore after every session it means you are pushing too hard. It is ok to feel sore after hard sessions and to attempt recovering faster you should ALWAYS warm up and cool down, do some light stretching after and even consider ice baths after hard sessions. Also eating a healthy and balanced diet provides the adequate fuel for your body to enhance recovery. Besides that, just follow hard training days with easy sessions and you might want to consider getting a roller foam to massage your muscles a bit.

I'll agree with Jorge. That would be a lot of pain killers if you take them every time you're sore.

Just remember that the soreness means you're getting stronger. That should make it easier to deal with.

Icy Hot.

My ex boyfriend, who ran marathons and cycled like a fiend always smelled like Icy Hot and Ben-Gay. But apparently it works well - I learned to like the scent

I myself recommend Tylenol for serious soreness. It even helped when I got massively sunburned at the beach - keeps inflammation down.

Haha that definitely eases the soreness a little. I usually take pain killers once or twice a week so it is not like I am popping them left and right on the bike. I think I'll just lessen the intensity and go more for quality.

Just to clarify my response so the MDs don't jump on me. I don't take Tylenol unless it's something a bit beyond "muscle soreness" - this is rare. Usually if I've slept funny, etc. Otherwise, I am a masochist and enjoy the feeling of sore muscles and just push through them.

I'm not so sure this is masochist. I love the feeling unless it's so severe I can't function.

After long runs I've soaked my legs in the bath tub half full with warm water and 2-3 cups of Epsom salt. The next morning I felt great and went on longish bike rides (my training plan schedules the long run the night before the long bike).

Seems to work great. I'm not into painkillers, prefer natural remedies. My lack of hot tub and hate of ice baths made me research other ways. The salt supposedly is absorbed through your skin. I sit in it for about 20 minutes. Then I go to bed and elevate the legs.

    Good post workout nutrition.

Plenty of fluids (not coffee, beer, or soft drinks)

    Plenty of sleep.

The Stick works for me on tightness but really don't help soreness.

I am a firm believer in modern chemistry but in this case you're just masking you're body telling you to take it easy for a day or two.
