Yes I was thinking of doing the sprint maybe the Olympic (just to see if I could finish). When you say cold, how cold do you mean exactly?? I don't have a wetsuit but was wondering if I should rent one or borrow for the weekend.

I would strongly recommend you use a wetsuit. I have a shorty and it was cold through out the entire swim this morning. I've been swimming the lake all summer and it's starting to noticeably cool down already. It's been a bad summer.
There is one hotel in town called the Park Center Hotel. It's right in the center of town. I have never stayed there and according to the online ratings it's nothing to write home about. All that said, if what you're looking for is a clean bed I think it's adaquate.

I am registered for this race as Athena.  I have a wetsuit in line as I've heard it's cold. Can't wait!!! I also hear it's a pretty good BBQ at the end too!

Im thinking of doing this race; I did the Cascades Edge in June (same course). Its a great little race, course is nice, but I had pouring rain when I did it in June. The lake has got to be warmer than then, however, a wetsuit would definitely help. The ride has a few hills but nothing too bad and the run is through the park, mainly on a trail. It is actually one of my favorite courses in the area, but a little far for me from Seattle. Yes, the food is usually pretty good after too. They had baked potato bar in June, which was surprisingly perfect for post race food when you are freezing.

I've done the sprint once, the half iron twice... Great race!

All three times the water was warmer than the air, once the fog lifted, each day was a nice sunny beautiful day, but the morning chilly fog was colder than the water.

That being said, I've used a wetsuit each time and recommend it.

I am a mouse click away from registering for this, too!  Looks like a fun time.  I'd have to get up at 3 am or some ungodly hour to get there, but I suppose that's part of the fun. Actually mapquest says there's a pretty direct route in about an hour, but I might have to test that out before relying on it for race morning!

I am also waiting until the very last minute to register for the Mercer Island tri this weekend, as I want good weather, and if it is going to rain, I am going to bag it!!!  Lame, I know, but gotta do what I gotta do.

It only takes me about 45 minutes from Seattle- so it cant be much worse for you. Im going to wait and see what the weather is that week before this race too. I dont think I can bear one more rainy tri this summer, ive paid my dues with 2 nasty weather races.

My neighbor and I are doing the sprint tri on Sunday. It will be our first. I was out at the lake last week and the water was fairly nice but it will cool down and I think the weather will be cool. I am wearing a full wet suit. I'm a wimp when it comes to cold. Good luck! I hear it is a lot of fun.

There are plenty of places to stay in Enumclaw which is only aprox. 7 miles south of the park.

I'm going to head out on Saturday (MAYBE) and time how long it takes me to get there. I'd love to see the start of the 1/2 IM too and maybe meet some BTers?

There's a thread in the SeaTri forum that has some less-than-stellar things to say about how the race was run (run course in particular) and another that was talking about a lot of gravel on the road of the half bike course.

Any one have any issues?

I have some complaints listed in my not-yet-published race report.  Still waiting for results to be posted (a gripe).  It was pretty but....

1.  Parking (I lucked out and got a good spot, but the cars stretched on for miles)

2.  No swag!

3.  Ran out of race tees (I got mine, but others did not)

4.  90 min after race still no results or announcement about awards.  It was cold out there!  24+ hours later there are still no results when they say online they will be posted by now.

5.  Crowded bike course with course marshalls on loudspeakers hollering to pass all the time, when it was really hard and clumping kept happening.  Could be my inexperience here, but it was frustrating thinking I was going to get DQ'd while trying to pass!

6.  BATHROOMS!  Not nearly enough!  I wasted a ton of time waiting to use one and missed the prerace meeting.

However, it was not UN-FUN there!  Just some feedback.  Oh yeah, the directions weren't very thorough and I got a bit lost both going there and leaving a different way.

There really were a lot of rules and regulations, more so than other races I've been at. The bike course didn't seem to be monitered. Just a few people standing at the side of the road and a couple of of motorcycles leading larger packs (I only saw this with the men though). There was a lot of gravel on the road and I had to ride in it a few times because of cars.

Also. I didn't really see any warning signs for drivers about the triathlon. I only saw "No parking" signs closer the park. I had to scream at people walking in my direct path. I couldn't get on the road because there was so much traffic!!!

The bathroom situation was a disaster and I'm really glad I wasn't feeling nervous. The transition area was so crowded when I went to pick up my bike after the race. I got yelled at countless numbers of times trying to get out the place. They have so many events going on, is it really MY fault!? I stayed to the right, yelled at to get over again and vice versa. I was pissed off.

I didn't get a T shirt even though I was "Guaranteed one". My friend who wasn't competing walked away with a bag of goodies yet I missed out yet again. Why give them to non athletes?

The BBQ looked nasty. I mean ugh. Honestly. I know it's free for athletes but come on.

I am however, still up with this. There are complaints at every race but no matter what I loved the course. I can put up with yelling, but I was worried with all the campers and trucks whizzing past me at 45 mph.

Did the Half on Saturday and didn't have any of the issues others are talking about.

Third time doing this event though, so knew what to expect and what I got. Sure some gravel on the shoulders, more on the two exits to gravel pits that the big truck seem to always leave some behind. Not any more than normal country rides. No one seems to mention the nice newly paved 3 to 5 mile section just north of the lake, nice and smooth.

Expected and actually enjoy the trail run aspect of the run course including the softball sized rocks on part of the run course as well as all the exposed tree roots on the trail around the lake.

maybe Saturday was better because it is only two events, both on the same distance course, so all people and volunteers are on one list of directions.

Parking has never been a problem for me as I'm overly early to everything including races, get there before they open the gate (at 6am) to the park and I guarantee a parking spot in the park ;-)

ditto on being different on saturday. I watch friends on sunday and thought the place was quite different on sunday. But they did have alot of races on sun going on! It seemed to be a little colder/damper on sunday. The lake wasnt as cold as I thought it may be also. All in all great course for a first 1/2!
