Subject: recommendation on bike trainer
I want to buy a bike trainer for the upcoming rainy season here in northern California. I was hoping folks could make some recommendations on a really good one. I'm not so much worried about the price as the quaility. I hate buying something cheap, only to have it not work, or work poorly and then I have to buy the expensive one anyways. I also hate to get someting and then get all obsessive about upgrading it.
I want something that I can depend on for about 60 to 100 miles per week. And that will last for more than one winter. Posting what you use and links is very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

quiet, reliable good 'feel' and if i remember correctly, a lifetime warranty.

of course, a computrainer would be a good option as well -  break up the boredom being able to 'ride' routes etc.

I use a CycleOps Fluid trainer. I believe the model number on mine was Fluid2. I've really liked it, and would really recommend it if you're not going to need one of the trainers with all the pedalstroke analysis, computer races, etc. For me, a spinervals DVD and I'm good.

Here's what appears to be their current model:

I second the vote for the CycleOps Fluid2.  I bought mine for substantially under MSRP on eBay.

I have a Blackburn Trakstand Fluid trainer and I love it. It is smooth, effective, and most importantly for me since I live in an apartment, quiet.

I will give you an expensive suggestion . . .

A Lemond Revmaster or Cycle-opts Spin bike. They can be adjusted to fit just like your bike and they are totally bullet proof. I have the Revmaster and love it. This way I never have to deal with putting my bike in or out, etc. It is just always ready to go.

I have to be on my trainer at least once a week (usually so I can get a workout in with my kids before the wife gets home) so this investment was worth it. I also have a home gym, a treadmill, and rollers . . .

How is riding that going to help with my cycling?

Spin bikes can be very effective cycle training. They can be adjusted to fit just like your bike, so you are training in the proper position. After that, they are like a bike on a trainer, except with a big heavy flywheel and fixed gear. This means no coasting and like riding a fixie, it will help your stroke.

Now, will it make you a better cyclist (as in ability to handle your bike)? Nope, but neither will sticking your bike on a trainer. Rollers will help there.

I don't think he was talking about the spin bike.

Edit: To hijack a little, but the OP might not know either: What's the difference between the magnetic and fluid trainers (besides $200).

Who cares if it helps right? Kidding aside, I have to also go with cyclops fluid2. I bought two years ago from these guys http://www.agees.com/Opening.htm .They had the best price I could find.

Kurt Kinetic - http://www.kurtkinetic.com/  Completely satisfied with it.

Fluid trainers supposedly provide a more realistic road riding feel than magnetic trainers.  I haven't tried a magnetic so I can't really compare the two.

bikeboyaug - 2007-09-06 1:43 PM Can't you at least consider some rollers ....you'll be bored to death on a trainer! Smile

How are rollers less boring than a trainer?

I'll put in another vote for a CycleOps Fluid and some Spinervals DVDs.

I did that, too, and got a great deal on the trainer, mat, blocks, and thing that covers the bike.  I think it was all cheaper than the trainer is retail.
