Lafayette, Louisiana

71F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 50m 27s
Overall Rank = 168/352
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 7/25
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4, bagels and coffee, shower and shave, dress, throw stuff in car, and drive. Parked at site by 6am, got body marked, claimed the end spot on our rack, then picked up chip.

Event warmup:

Twenty minutes on the bike.

Aerobic mosquito and red ant swatting.
Swim
  • 21m 20s
  • 875 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Everyone said the course was long due to a drifting buoy, times reflect that.

Not a bad swim considering. Got a little beat up early, hung back for a few seconds to get some less turbulent water. Did manage to draft a little bit early, swam the whole thing with a crawl stroke except a little breaststroke around the final buoy to catch my breath.
What would you do differently?:

Still need to work on the swim.

2006's time: 17:53, shorter course. ;)
Transition 1
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

Swim exit on a dock, had trouble getting footing on steps to get out the water. Then you climbed a set of stairs and ran up about 50 yards of embankment. From there, it was about another quarter-mile or more to the transition area, running barefoot on the asphalt.Took my time, slow jog.

rack was on the far side of transition, near the bike exit. Once I got to the bike, got helmet on easily, short run with bike to mount line, decent mount and takeoff.
What would you do differently?:

Too long of a run, too little run training.
Bike
  • 54m 29s
  • 20 miles
  • 22.03 mile/hr
Comments:

Started off pushing too hard and getting frustrated with an average in the low 21mph range. Didn't raalize until later that there was a headwind going out, was able to average 23 coming back.
What would you do differently?:

Eh, carrying too much extra weight around the middle.

2006's time:50:23
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Uneventful dismount, racked well, got shoes on, grabbed race belt and hat, and took off. Longish run out of transition, met immediately by a massive wall of heat and humidity.By this time it's 92F.
What would you do differently?:

Nada.

Run
  • 30m 31s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Best described as a survival jog. managed to run all of the first half, then walked through the water stops and up the hill on the way back. Last year I remember passing rivals strongly on the last hill then sprinting most of the last mile. This year, not so much.

2006's time: 23:26
What would you do differently?:

Train. Have only run twice since June, both times in races.

Did tell the RD that next year I'm going to wait until October to do the run. T2 time will suck, but my run will be a lot faster in cooler temperatures.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank about ten Gatorades.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Plantar fasciitis. Been fighting it since December, have run less than a quarter of what I ran last year, have also put on 20 or so pounds.

2006's total time- 1:35:16, this year a full 15:30 slower.

Event comments:

Best race in Louisiana.

It was definitely hot. Nice meeting you before the race in transition area. I hope your PF gets better where you can get back to running. How far would you estimate the swim was?

Congratulations on a job well done.  (I do breath easier, once you are out of the water.  Wink)

It was a great race, even if it was hot.

Good race Bear. I know it pains you not to be at the top of your game on your home course.

I have to agree with your assessment of best race in Louisiana. The water is drinkable on the swim and the bike is a speedy course and the postrace is superb. Only knock is that hot run.

Hope the plantars heals well, I like reading your reports.

Don't listen to Manatee; triathletes pee in that water.

Congratulations on your RACE Monsieur Bear!  Smart idea about saving next year's run 'til October too.
