Sunny
Total Time = 44m 46s
Overall Rank = 366/373
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 33/33
Pre-race routine:

Banana, GU packet and a Myoplex shake for breakfast.
Event warmup:

Walked around, Chi stretches, ran through my Taiji forms to mellow out.
Run
  • 44m 46s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 14m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt really good for the first mile. Got to the second mile at 27:12 - but the entire second mile was a side slope and by the end of the 2nd mile, my calves and ankles were hurting from that. Really slowed up on the last mile. BUT, I ran all of it and finished in less than 45 minutes, so I met both of my race goals. Little brother finished in 36 minutes and change. I'm really proud of how far he's come in the last month and a half.
What would you do differently?:

Even with the short distance, I should have taken a GU before the start of the race. I didn't set my "drink timer," so I didn't drink what I felt was enough water. Other than that, I need to keep putting in the miles :)
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, stretch, eat an orange, drank some water and took an Endurolyte capsule.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Well, I'm still big, so that doesn't help ;)

Event comments:

Water and oranges at the finish line. Super sweet long sleeve race shirt.

Thanks everyone. I had a blast today. The ChiRunning concepts are really working well for me. The funny thing is that I've been talking to some long distance runners about it and they already run that way (for the most part). I guess some people figure it out on their own and others (ME) need to be pointed in the right direction and kicked...

I finally saw the pumpkin at the finish line, be I think he cheated - I didn't see him at the turnaround. My biggest kavetch with the race were the people doing 15 to 20 minute 5k's. They were fairly nasty (and vocal) about us slower people being in their way coming back from the turn around... So far, triathlons and wushu competitions are the only events that I've seen where people cheer on their "competitors."

My next race is in the middle of December. I've signed up for a 4 event race series over the winter. I am determined to become one with the road (as long as it doesn't involve me under a big truck), so I figured "what the heck." Once race every month from December to March. No T-shirts, but the whole series is $20 - can't beat that. You can pick to do a 5k or 10k when you show up. For now, I'm planning December, January and February to be 5k runs, and if I can get my distance up and pace down to 12 min/mile, I'll do the 10k in March. Thanks again everyone. I'm just getting warmed up

-Frank

Yep, I've been living in the area most of my life. It's not bad once you learn to ignore the rednecks It's centrally located to all of my favorite places - Baltimore, NYC, DC and Ontario.

awesome job! its fun racing with family - adds a whole new layer of motivation. my brother (who has done a half dozen half marathons in the past 5 years) ran with me in my first 5k last march. he finished 10 minutes or so ahead of me. now i'm slowly getting closer to his average times. it will be a great day when he and i can cross the finish lines together!

I've really enjoyed running with my brother. We live 3 miles from each other and don't get to hang out much - family, work, life, etc. - so it was good to spend some time with him. I look forward to continuing to run with him until he gets his first shoulder operation in December. Then, he won't do much for 3 to 4 months (the no Golf thing is going to kill him) and then in June/July of next year, he gets the other shoulder fixed up. Then the whole thing starts over again. I figure by 2006/2007 he should be ready to start swimming and cycling again

Congratulations on your run!

I'm sure you have plenty of magnificent "places" to travel in your mind while running (saw your diving pictures on the album).

Getting closer to that wreck you wrote about!
