Subject: Newbie - North Jersey - Few Questions

Hi all,

I am just getting into triathlons and am VERY inspired.

First of all - I just wanted to say "hi all."  It's nice to be part of a community again - even if just a virtual one at this point (training alone).

I just started triathlon training about four months ago.  And just finished my first one (a sprint) in Delaware (Cape Henlope).  I did way better than expected - 1:45.  Especially considering that I was riding a mountain bike . . . . I felt like a human sail.

I used to be a mountaineer until a serious injury eight years ago in Nepal.  Since then my weight balooned to 317 lbs.   Been working at it a few years now.  And, with triathlon training I am now at about 265 (and dropping!!!).

Unfortunately I live in Maplewood NJ (northern NJ) and, as far as I can tell from Internet searches, there is no community here . . . . so triathlon's my little secret.

That's why this site is so fantastic.  It makes me feel that I am part of a community.  And when getting into a new sport - especiallly one as demanding as this one is in terms of training time required - having a community is ivery mportant.

Two questions:

1) I need to register for a spring triathlon on east coast - to give me some inspiration through the winter.  Can't find a good one to sign up for - 2005 season is not posted yet.  By spring I want to do an olympic length (though sprin is OK - at this point it's the goal thats important. Any suggestions?

2) How do I find a training group?  Is there a Web site with cliub listing by state?  Or does anyone know of one in No. Jersey?

Drop me a line if you live in Northern NJ or you know of a good east coast sprint/olympic length triatalon I might want to shoot for.

Cheers,

-Peter

Welcome to the site. It's terrific--lots of encouragement and good advice. I'm a newbie, haven't done a sprint yet. I'm looking forward to spring too! Well done on your first sprint--1:45 is great! And congrats on your weight loss. That's why I first got interested in doing a tri--and it's working, slowly!

Hey Peter, I'm on the outskirts of Philly. You have a few options for a Spring race (most of these are south of you):

The Columbia Triathlon is a great Olympic Distance event. The swim is nice and the bike and run courses are challenging with lots of hills. Race organization is top notch and weather ranges from 42 degrees and rainy (2003) to brutally hot (2004). www.tricolumbia.org

Thundergust Triathlon is a nice sprint in NJ in June. .4 mile lake swim, 15 mile flat bike and 4.5 mile run on flat trails and roads in a state park. www.lin-mark.com

L&M Computer Sports puts on some Spring triathlons but I don't know much about them. www.lmsports.com

Triathlantic is another local timing company, I'm not sure what their schedule looks like for 2005. www.triath.com

Hmmmm...north Jersey.  I got a kick out of your line above.

On this site, there are club listings.  Top right of the page says "directory"  Click there.

I don't know of any races in your area in the spring.  Keep watching www.active.com

Good luck training!

Peter,

Welcome to BT! Good News for you. There is a club not too far from you.

Check out Team Excel - http://www.exceltriathlon.com/

Gary Flink is a great guy. Anyone is more than welcome to train w/ the team but you do have to have 2 years racing experience before you can be considered to join.

Also, send me a PM and I will give you a list of races in the area. I grew up in North Jersey near JC/Boken. I live in Philly now and there are plenty throughout the Spring/Summer that are relatively close. Most are in South Jersey but there are a few closer as well.

Welcome Peter,

Try this: http://www.nytc.org/.They run my my favorite local sprint in Harriman State Park (about 1/2 hr from Mahwah). They do it in June and August, don't know if that is too late in spring for you, but it's a well run, beautiful race. good luck, MArk
