Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:20 AM. My daughter was ready, so was I we had to wait for my friend who is visiting from out of town.

Loaded up and got to parking about 5:25.
Event warmup:

Well the usual, chatted with new people and people I knew.

Nothing really a bit cool and dark - lol.
At one point I thought - oh yeah run around a bit - nope just walked myself through the transition to know where Swim in was located and Bike in/Out and run out.
Swim
  • 53m 7s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

my swim - okay I need a personal swim coach. I took like ooooh FOREVER to get out of the water - lol.
But guess what?!!?? I didn't panic when we had to tread water. Yeah I usually freak out when I have to tread, I didn't.
So that was a good thing for me.

But truth be told I estimated about an hour. I thought it took me longer, but I didn't drown, didn't need to be resuscitated, nothing of the sort. I swam off course twice (my goggles fogged up immediately so I couldn't see jack, I'm buying a few more pairs of the Vanquishers and throwing what I have away.).
During the third turn, I sucked in water once so bad I had a violent cough. Not one but TWO kayakers were headed in my direction, and a couple of swimmers stopped to ask if I was okay - der uhm "yes, thank you" I told them politely.
I felt like a dork I was one of the last peeps doing the Olympic to get out of the water.
the swim coach for master's swimming emphasizes kicking, well Heck, yesterday my legs were DONE by the time I got out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Well err uhm, I need a swim coach most definitely.
I have the endurance, I need the speed, and I want & need LEGS when I get out of the water.

Transition 1
  • 03m 57s
Comments:

Getting to T1 seemed to take an eternity.
Ohh and the Hill made things interesting. I just didn't want to fall, and it was one of those hills that are great for kids rolling down. But an adult trying to get down it, yeah - not fun.
I DROPPED my bike while running. Never had that happen before I was floored.
Then I couldn't get the pedals aligned to lock in - lol
What would you do differently?:

Uhhm I need tri-shoes and practice with that type of transition.
Other than that I am not going to complain.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 10s
  • 24 miles
  • 16.71 mile/hr
Comments:

First turn a stinkin' hill, and then the turn onto Ridge we hit a VERY STRONG head wind for the first half, very fast on the second half of each loop. Two times I hit the hill and hit a wall, the second two times I was much better/stronger. Nothing major here, since the wind was so strong I stayed in the drops rather than on the horns, but I think that was okay for me.
What would you do differently?:

Der uhm ......
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

I could get one foot out of one shoe and the other I had half-way out.
I decided not to push it since I was wiggling on the bike.
The last thing I wanted was to wipe out on the road and not Make it into transition.

I did my norm for the race - so this time is usually what i see.
I'm sure a coach can help me decide how to get faster, but it's all good.

What would you do differently?:

I need tri shoes - nuff said.
Run
  • 1h 21m 33s
  • 10 kms
  • 08m 09s  min/km
Comments:

The run - I ran for 4.5 miles - then ...There was one hill that claimed my right hamstring. I walked it, ran the down, walked the ups and ran the downs.

I was proud of myself for running, but also to listening to my body.
Yes it caused me to walk, but I have another tri in two weeks, why overdo it?
What would you do differently?:

Hhm, well, not much really. Of course running in the evenings may help some. And of course just more running period.

Stay hydrated, better.
Post race
Warm down:

water...water....I need water..... any food left.
Dang..... ate a few orange slices and drank some water.
no Accelerade or anything else left.

Went to transition, packed up the bike, the bag and headed to the vehicle.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being better hydrated - the fall is a tough time for me.
so the hydration is a learning experience and forcing a new habit.

For the most part, I came into this race with one goal - to finish.
I did it in about 4-hours (thanks for all the cheers), but again I finished - so I'm a winner.

Now maybe after a few more workouts, refining certain things, or even eliminating idiosyncrasies I have while doing a certain workout, I can begin to set better time goals.

Event comments:

They mentioned the run is challenging - they weren't kidding.

Great job too all the peeps out there who did either distance.

Anything over four and I would have needed one of those counters like in the Chariot race in the movie The Ten Commandments (with Charlton Heston) Serious Headwind going out, Nice Tailwind coming back, so I guess it averaged itself out.

Way to go!  Sounds like you really enjoyed the race.  Sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to you about it today, since I was out of my element in the other building.  But finishing an olympic is a HUGE accomplishment.  You should be proud.

Congrats!
