Are tri shoes really worth the money? Finally looking at getting something, and all I can find about the differences is a single blog entry. They seem to have 1 strap vs 2 straps, and theoretically are easier to put on.

Some opinions would be nice, even recommendations. Thanks

More than theoretically, tri shoes are significantly easier to put on and are almost a "must" if you are going to do the "shoes on the bike thing." One strap, no tongue, loop in the back to pull the heel on.

But yeah, that's the biggest (only?) advantage of a tri shoe. Don't know of any disadvantages.

Just purchased new tri shoes, they have great ventilation and easy to slip on but lack the full support that you get with a multi strap road shoe. Best shoe for the money I found, Louis Garneau Tri Air 2. For a shoe in my price range I found them to be very comfortable without socks and lightweight compared to others that I tried on. You will find better tri shoes but you will spend 200+  . Also trisports.com is having a decsent shoe sale now.

Do the size typically translate well to your shoe size? Or should you go down a size?

I have both tri and road shoes. I do my training  in my road shoes and tris Oly and shorter in my tri shoes and train a couple times in them before each tri.

Road shoes fit better and stay on my feet better as they have more straps...clearly they are harder to get on and off. I have wide feet and have some shimano shoes for men that come in regular and wide width. They have great ventilation but aren't designed to get wet all the time.

Tri shoes much easier to get on but don't stay on my feet as well and doing longer rides I can get cramps in the balls of my feet.

For my HIM I'm wearing my road shoes as comfort means more to me than faster T1 or T2...and may actually save me time.

I wear the same size bike shoes as my Birkenstock as most are European sizing.

Same for me. Almost word for word, sans the wide feet.
