Subject: Healthy snack ideas for work?
I’m looking for healthy snack ideas to have during work in between meals. Currently my snacks are usually Goldfish crackers, pretzels, granola bars (PB & choc chip flavor) and once in awhile baby carrots or grapes. Although I like baby carrots, I’ve recently been getting bags that contain ones that are soggy in the middle (eewwww!). Maybe I should switch to regular carrots and take the time to peel them and cut them up.

I shop at a regular chain grocery store, and when I get there I never know what to pick out. I need some inspiration. I’m bored with the snacks that I currently have, but never know what to buy at the store to make better ones. I do have access to a microwave, fridge/freezer at work. Also, I’m vegetarian so no meat, fish, or poultry for me.

So anybody have some favorite snack ideas/recipes that they’d like to share?

Do you like Japanese food? One of my favorites is Edamame, soy beans. I buy a package of pre-cooked edamame and just microwave a little bowl and eat for my snack. That with a bottle of water is my favorite snack, just wish I had it more often.

Dried Fruit (cherries & goldens) and some cashews and almonds.  easy to eat, sweet and salty, and a little water makes the fruit expand in the belly.  I usually have about a quarter cup of dried fruit and a handful of nuts in the morning.  Afternoon is lite yogurt and a banana.

Oh boy, a topic on food! I could go on and on...just kidding! Great snacks I have: cottage cheese, Dannon yogurt, trail mix, apple or banana, string cheese, tortilla with spinach and melted munster cheese, hardboiled eggs...I try to avoid processed foods- chips, crackers, cookies, etc. I eat every few hours, something small and drink plenty of water. I have a big bottle sitting right here next to me at work.

Steve: I'll have to try Jamaba Juice. Never tried it, but a smoothie drink sounds good. Are they good before a workout?

tortilla with spinach and melted munster cheese

Ohh...that sounds yummy! I always have water by me at work. We've got these ice & water machines here at work so I just keep refilling my glass all day long. I've been drinking a lot more water during the day ever since they added those machines. And they're FREE!

I haven't been to a Jamba Juice in a long time. They're always on the other side of town for me. But I like the one that has strawberries and bananas, and the one with chocolate and PB.

ever tried dehydrated fruit and veggies?  Not DRIED, DEHYDRATED.  Kinda like space food, but it's all natural, no preservatives and damn tasty.  Maybe give them a whirl.

I love trail mix. It may not be the healthiest but it's delicious my last batch included: raisins, dried cranberries, dried cherries, peanuts, cashews, butterscotch chips, and M&M's. It's soooo good b/c it's got salty stuff, sweet stuff and chocolate. Like I said, probably not the healthiest.

I cheat. I keep a box of energy bars in my bottom desk drawer. I also keep sunflower seeds. They keep my mouth busy without necessarily taking in too much. The energy bar with a glass of water gets me through the last couple of hours at the office. I also like the idea of peanuts, cashews or trail mix. Dried fruit works too, that way you don't have to worry about them going bad or getting bruised.

94% fat free popcorn. If you buy the Jolly Time brand, there are some good flavors... carmel apple, kettle corn, and butter!

I second the apples & peanut butter snack...that's my fave! Hummus and whole wheat crackers are another good snack, oatmeal or yogurt w/ go lean crunch cereal mixed in.

Ok, here's kind of a silly question. I've had hummus at a restaurant (w/ pita bread) and it was really good. Can you find hummus in the grocery store, or do you have to make it? I would expect if it were pre-made and at the store, it would be in a plastic container, kind of like potato salad or salsa comes in. If it needs to be made, is there some sort of kit? I looked all over at my store, but couldn't find it, and didn't have the slightest idea what section it woud be in.

You can buy it in tubs at most decent grocery stores. Or you can just buy the stuff and make it:

4 garlic cloves
1 teaspoon salt
2 (1-pound 3-ounce) cans chick-peas, drained and rinsed
2/3 cup well stirred tahini (sesame seed paste, look in the ethnic foods section)
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, or to taste
1/2 cup olive oil, or to taste
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves
2 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted lightly
Toasted pita thins

On a cutting board mince and mash the garlic to a paste with the salt. In a food processor puree the chick-peas with the garlic paste, the tahini, the lemon juice, 1/4 cup of the oil, and 1/2 cup water, scraping down the sides, until the hummus is smooth and add salt to taste. Add water, if necessary, to thin the hummus to the desired consistency and transfer the hummus to a bowl. In the food processor, cleaned, puree the remaining 1/4 cup oil with the parsley until the oil is bright green and the parsley is minced transfer the parsley oil to a small jar. The hummus and the parsley oil may be made 3 days in advance and kept covered and chilled. Divide the hummus between shallow serving dishes and smooth the tops. Drizzle the hummus with the parsley oil and sprinkle it with the pine nuts. Serve the hummus with the pita.

Over the past few months I’ve done some experimenting, and here are some favorite snacks that I now have for work:

Fresh spinach leaves with chopped carrots, almond slices, dried cranberries, and mandarin oranges. The juice from the oranges make a great “salad dressing.”

Taboule with lemon juice and tomatoes over fresh spinach leaves (I love this stuff!).

Quaker’s “Trail Mix” granola bars. Lots of nuts and seeds all stuck together. My new favorite bar.

Fruit. Orange slices (easier to eat them sliced than taking the time to peel) and bananas are my popular ones right now.

Fat free yogurt. I’m trying different fruit flavors this week. I was stuck on strawberry, strawberry kiwi, and berries & cream for awhile…now it’s time for some new flavors.

Brie cheese on crackers.

And if I run out of anything, I have a small jar of PB and a box of crackers in my desk drawer. I figure that’s a bit better than hitting the vending machine and going for chocolate.

Anyone ever tried Soy Nut Butter? Its in the peanut butter section, and its a yummy change from PB every so often. I keep that at my desk at work and have it with apples or whole wheat crackers. Dried fruit and almonds are also always in my lunch bag. Cottage cheese and whole wheat crackers are another filling snack for me.

Ok, a little late in the thread, but I have some coarse porridge with dry prunes (or apricots) as my 10 o'clock snack.
Nice and quick. Keeps you going until lunch.

Late to this thread but thought I'd share my carrot idea. I buy the large carrots, clean and cut them when I get home. Then I keep them in a container with water in the fridge. They stay crisp and are much cheaper this way. When I'm preparing my meals for the day, I scoop out a bit and add to my lunch box.
