Subject: Help: Saddle sore.
Hey all,

I am a newbie and have a ton of questions, as I am finding challenges in all three events. Todays question is about saddle sores.

I have only ridden a few a few times but I am getting irritated on my perineum (yes, i snickering as I typed that). This is starting to get painful and I want to prevent it from interferring with my riding. Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

-Steven

Aloha

been through this and the best advice I got was get some saddle soap (shammy soap) put a little on the pad in your shorts (and I put a little on my skin ) cured long standing prob.

Also tried different saddles till I got one I liked.

Good luck.

Also referred to as chamois butter, chamois cream, etc. You can also use body glide.

You could eventually look into a saddle called the ISM adamo. It's a saddle which is made specifically to rid of perineum issues.

Look at this link and it's the last saddle reviewed. Also, you can do a search on the forum...the saddle has been discussed alot. I personally ride it and will not go back to any other kind of saddle.

the very FIRST thing I would is to check bike fit. That should put you in a proper riding posoition (and comfortable), plus you'll need time on the saddle to get used to ti. If you still have issues then try a different sadel, butter, etc.

I agree with Jorge. Get a proper fit, then shop for new saddles if necessary.

There's lots of info needed.... most of it personal   Are you wearing a good pair of bike shorts with a nice chamois?  underwear underneath?  (don't).  As Jorge said, bike properly fitted?  What type of saddle?

Is this in an aero position or on the drops?

I used to use Chamois butter, then I found Assos Cream.  I love t.  minty fresh

If you already have irritation, you can use diaper rash cream to take it away. Personally, I like Desitin creamy because it's not as gooey as some of the other ones.  Once you've got the irritation gone, prevent it from coming back by using chamois cream, body glide, etc.  There's lots of other good advice here on how to prevent it, too, so I'm not going to relist all of that.

Are you talking about skin irritation or more of a deep soreness?

For the skin use the body glide and consider buying better riding shorts/bibs. I ride a fair amount and I get zero skin issues without body glide wearing Sugoi bibs.

For the deep soreness I think you just have to toughen up buttercup. When you are first starting you will just have those deep horrible taint pains that feel like they'll never go away. After a few weeks they will only show up on your longer rides. After a few months they basically become a non-issue.

Personally, I was resistant to the bike short at first. I thought all that lycra was silly (which is true). However, if you aren't wearing biking shorts or bibs then immediately stop what you are doing and go out and buy some. Your cycling life will be changed forever. All that silly stuff people wear actually does make a difference. While you are in the process of accepting this fact you can always wear normal clothes over the top of them - just wear them somewhere. Welcome to a life of looking like an idiot in front of your friends and neighbors! Its a hoot.

Ok. lets try this again. i typed this totally awsome response and it did not post... oh, well.

anyways, the irritation is only skin. I think it was caused during my bike fit. I was wearing my underwear under my brand new bike shorts ( lots of spandex... opps.

I think I gave the tech some bad feedback during my fitting, and thus he set my saddle too far back. After putting 50 miles on the bike I think I found the sweet spot on the saddle. So now I think i will need to have the saddle moved forward and then raised a bit.

I have an appointment in the morning to be refit.

thanks again for the help!!

You will find the better saddles have more flex, allowing the contact area to conform better. I also agree with a good pair of shorts, if you are not sure what shorts or bibs to get ask your LBS to make some recomendations based on the riding that you do, while your at it see if they can look at your saddle also.

I've occasionally has issues with cycling shorts that are too padded on my tri bike.  My LBS recommended Quoleum antifriction over the normal Chamois Butter or similar products.  This stuff is fantastic!
