Was watching online the IMFL video. It was noted by the reporter that several athlete's were wearing compression socks as several had also done in Kona. Never heard about them except on my FIL who wears them for blood circulation issues. Anybody else know why? If thats what they were wearing, most were knee high and red.
PS I know RED is to make them faster.

Wow, I never heard of that. I had to wear one a couple years ago after a bad cycling crash. Once the bruising in my shoulder, hip, and leg started to heal all the blood went into my right leg swelling my right ankle and lower leg quite painfully. The doctor had me wear a compression sock for a couple of weeks until my body absorped all the loose blood. My friends and wife thought it was very funny that I was wearing old man compression socks. I wish I would have know about Iron Man atheletes wearing them I might have salvaged some dignity from the situation. Naw, it wouldn't have worked my wife and friends would still have laughed. It would have been cool to have red ones though, my only choice was white.

I am someone that HAS to where them. I am a BOP so I'm no Paula Radcliffe because I know she wears them also.

I have a condition in one of my legs that makes for VERY poor blood circulation. If I do not wear a stocking on my bad leg, then I get increased swelling and my leg becomes more tired and therefore I slow down even more. I used to wear them on both legs because I thought it would even out my legs but really just my bad leg seems to benefit from it.

The short answer is yes, it does help with better blood circulation. As far as pros or FOP using them for more speed when they don't HAVE to use them, I really don't know if it improves speed or not.

However, in triathlon, I think any time savings may be lost in T1. They are very difficult to get on especially after a swim. I use baby powder to help get them on quicker during T1. Since I am in the BOP, the white cloud around my area doesn't seem to bother most folks since most are already well on their way on the bike.

While I realize many people think this is a trendy thing, some of us are actually stuck wearing them if we want to continue to compete in races and just work out in general.

That is a article that talks about some perceived and actual benefits.  As stated earlier, they are really trendy right now.

They were trendy at the NYC marathon, too. Women 1-2 were wearing 'em, or maybe they were just really old school tubesox.

Joe Friel wrote about them in his blog.  He found very little research on their use for healthy athletes.  One study indicated a reduction in delayed-onset muscle soreness 24 hours after running a 10K.  He found no other research specific to use on healthy athletes.

Seems the prevailing wisdom is potentially speedier recovery, and potential reduction in muscle fatigue in long endurance running events.  I'd need to see more conclusive research before you'll see me wearing them ;-)

Seems to me if there is something to it, it would make sense as a full leg tight rather than just a sock.  I don't know about you, but for me it's my quads that protest loudest after a marathon, more so than my calves.

Didn't Joe Namath were panty hose for similar reasons when he was a quarterback like 150 years ago?

Namath did a TV commercial for pantyhose. He didn't wear them for health reasons.

I thought he said he wore them because he felt his legs stayed fresher/stronger longer with them than without...  but it's been a long time ago.

Are you saying he didn't wear them when he played football?

It may be trendy, but they do make sense.  The compression improves circulation and should help prevent muscle fatigue in endurance athletes.  Some of these socks also provide excellent ankle support, which makes sense, especially for running. Other companies have jumped on the compression trend like CW-X, which uses the same technology in it's clothing.

I'm pretty sure he never wore pantyhose outside of commercials.

I get cramping during a long run and I'm really, really slow. Do you think this would help?

Well, right now they would provide a psychological advantage, and these days, that could be the difference between placing and not. If you think they prevent fatigue and aid performace, then they do. If you feel 'faster' then a lot of time, you are faster. As we tap out our physical abilities, we will be leaning toward pschological advantages. Not saying that's all this is, but that's all it needs to be, if you understand what I mean be that.

Soon we'll see people wearing full compression suits during events.  They'll look kind of like that dillhole T.O. when he warms up for the Cowboys.
