Total Time = 53m 58s
Overall Rank = 2148/2496

Age Group Rank = 305/321
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5:30, packed the car (we're traveling for the weekend) and hit the road around 6:30. Got to Andover at 7:15, checked in and headed over to the track for the kids race at 8:00. After the kids reace I met up with the rest of the BT folks (DK, OnTheRun, tri_again, akabak, Max) then headed over towards the start for the adult race.
Event warmup:

Didn't warmup before the race, used the 1st mile to warm up. By that time we had made it to the top of first hill and my hands were sweating, so I took off my running gloves and tossed them in a trash barrel by the side of the road.
Run
  • 53m 58s
  • 5.03 miles
  • 10m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Starting out I felt pretty strong, but by the time I got to the first mile mark I was getting pretty hot, so I tossed by running gloves. Shortly afterwards, I took off my zip-up top and tied it around my waist. The course had a few gradual uphills and downhills, but I was able to maintain my pace pretty consistently.
What would you do differently?:

Dress a little less for the run. Before the start I was slightly cold, but I started to overheat during the run. Thankfully I was able to adjust during the race, so I was okay.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with DK, waited in line to turn in our chips and get our pies, then walked back to the car to meet my wife and kids.

Event comments:

Overall my goals were to (1) finish in under 55 minutes and (2) maintain a steady pace. I accomplished the first by finishing in 53:58, and the second by keeping my mile splits consistent (3.5% difference between fastest and slowest miles). But, I was surprised by how high my HR was, definitely a sign of more work needed!

Doing this race also brought to a close my first "real" season of racing, since it was after this race last year that I started getting serious about training. And it shows in the results - 11:55 pace last year for 5k, 10:44 this year for 8k.

Nice race Scott!

It was much better than last year's rain.

Did you get thru the line in time to get a pie? I heard they ran out.

Happy Thanksgiving~

Congrats on meeting your goals.  Sorry for scattering all over the place.  We were to run with you.

Great to see your family, and hope they had fun, too.
