Does anyone know of any routes in the Downtowm/Point Loma area that are safe to ride in the early morning/pre-dawn hours?

Not sure if I'd consider it "pre-dawn" safe, only because of the wide spaced street lights. But you might consider the Silver Strand bike trail near Coronado.

The good thing (probably most important) is that its a dedicated bike path, so you won't have to worry about cars. There normally are runners, rollerbladers, and other bikers there as well, so its fairly well traveled by others as well. You won't be out there alone in the boonies.

I never thought about going over to Coronado.  I may have to do some rides starting at 5-530am and I'm looking for a good spot, so Coronado may have to do.  Do you know if a lot of people are out there that early, and how long of a round trip is it from Glorrieta to the end of the strand and back?  Thanks for the help.

If you start from the park under the bridge, it's around 20 mile round trip. So I'm guessing around a 16 mile round trip to the turnaround point. I was there at 6 am today and there were a few people but not that bad due to the early morning time. Make sure you bring a light to make others aware that your out there especially since there was a lot of fog there this morning and you'll possibly be riding earlier. Just because it's clear at home doesn't mean there won't be fog there.

Thanks everyone for the help. I just bought a light (I can't believe how expensive they are) and some illumalite clothing so hopefully I should be good.  It's going to be different riding in the early morning.  Maybe will pass by riding one day.
