Subject: Kurt Kinetic Power computer?
Well, I'm just full of questions this morning, aren't I?

Another possible gift idea for DH to me is the Kurt Kinetic power computer. I have a KK trainer, and this computer supposedly "estimates" power output on the trainer (doesn't work on the road, though, only the trainer). Has anyone used one of these? Would it be useful to me at all if I can't use it on the road (most of my saddle time over the winter will probably be on the trainer...)

Here's a link with info about the product: http://www.lickbike.com/productpage.asp?PART_NUM_SUB='3212-06'

From what I understand, this product works because of the known resistance value relative to the increasing speed of the wheel. Basically, they know how much power it takes to spin a wheel one revolution at any given speed on their trainer. Using these known values, wheel RPM (speed) can be converted numerically into power output (watts). Since the unit is most often used in a controlled environment, and there are no other variables to take into account, it will provide an accurate means of measuring intensity.

If you really need to know your wattage output, it can be of use for you. However, since it simply uses wheel speed to compute that value, a simple bike computer with the sensor mounted to the back wheel will accomplish the same task, with output measured in MPH rather than watts. If you could get your hands on the resistance curve for the KK trainer, you could calculate the watts yourself, should you be so inclined.

Actually, just found it:

I, too, have a KK road machine and was procrastinating figuring this out for myself after thinking about it for a while. It was a little self serving, so thanks for the push. Hope it helps you, too.
