Thanks for that advice Nackles!!  I will see what the xray shoes but that's interesting to know about them not really showing up!

I had a stress fracture in my foot last year and I was told that they don't tend to show up on x-rays, especially if they are small.  So if you do have an x-ray and it doesn't show it still doesn't mean you don't have one.  An MRI would be a better option.

As long as it is treated correctly then you are probably looking at about 6 - 8 weeks recovery time.

Nackles1 - 2007-12-22 2:13 PM Hi Angela, I've had several stress fractures. The symptoms start out quite mild at first, you notice some pain when you walk, but it doesn't feel too major. Then as time goes on the pain gets worse and really starts to hurt. Pain killers were an absolute must for a few weeks. My doctor gave me a removable cast which really helped reduce the pain and accelerated the healing. I believe it took a good 6 to 8 weeks for it to heal properly. The trouble with stress fractures is that they do not show up on x-rays until they start to heal, so they can be difficult to spot at first. I would ask for a cast so that you don't do any additional damage while it's healing. People with high arches are apparently quite prone to them. I would recommend a getting a very good set of orthotics made to prevent more stress fractures from occurring. Best of luck! Nackles

x2 on all of the above (boot/cast, then orthotics), and also the MRI if your plan will cover it. Definite diagnosis is nice (although as below, not necessary).

Have had stress fracture in 2nd metatarsal (foot). Even if it doesn't show up on Xray, the symptoms alone can provide a pretty good diagnosis, and if your foot is hurting that much anyway, probably an overuse injury and your training plan or the way you execute it might need some tweaking.

See you have big goals for 2008 ... I continued training for marathons with stress fractures by doing water running. It stunk and was boring, but the results are fantastic and comparable to land running.

Good luck!!!

A stress fracture will sometimes not show up initially on a plain film.  A bone scan or MRI will show it.  Treatment depends on where it is in your foot.  Certainly active rest in a removable cast boot or shoe will help.

I went to the doc last week, she ordered a bone scan, and I got the results as I was heading out the door to pick up my packet for a 1/2 marathon. Stress fracture...sweet. It only hurts when I run, so it sounds like I caught it pretty early. So here's my question: can I still do IMAZ in April? If I be a good little triathlete and not run for 4 weeks (doc said wait 4, see if it hurts when I run, then ease back if it doesn't), is there a chance that I'll be ok--albeit slower--for the race?

Also, how should I change my diet while I'm healing? More calcium/vitamin d? Any other vitamins or minerals I should worry about?
