Subject: My first indoor tri - strategies anyone? (long)
I just registered for my first indoor tri. Its going to be on Dec 12 - approx 3 weeks. We're talking everything indoor - swim in pool for 10 mins, Bike on stationary for 20 mins, Run on dreadmill for 20 mins. There's a 3 min swim to bike transition time allowed before the next clock starts running. There's a 2 min bike to run transition. Scoring is very interesting!!!! Its done on a weighted per sport basis - not total distance overall. 30% swimming, 40% bike, 30% run. Example of scoring is below. The bike distance travelled is increased as you increase resistance (just like you would change a gear), run is 0 incline - go as fast as you can.

My goal = I want to go hard and place as high as possible. I've completed sprint program and have just started Olympic base build. Any strategies or suggestions on nutrition, transitions, workout prep, taper, etc? How about pre-race warm up?

With this type of scoring, how you finish depends entirely upon blowing out anyone else close to you (because their % becomes so much lower). 100 yards difference in the swim can be absolutely huge since it can shift around so many points. Same thing with the run - 2 tenths of a mile can make or break you.

Scoring example: Swim=30% max, Bike=40% max, Run=30% max
Best swimmer does 850 yards in 10 mins - weighted swim score is 100% x 30% = 30% (best possible score)
I do 600 yards - my weighted score is (600/850) x 30% = 70.5% x 30% = 21.17% weighted score

Best biker does 10 miles in 20 mins - score = 100% x 40% = 40% (again best score possible)
I do 9 miles = 9/10 x40% = 36% weighted score

Best runner does 3 miles in 20 mins = score 100% x 30% = 30%
I do 2.7 miles = (2.7/3) x 30% = 27%

My total weighted % is 21.17 + 36 + 27 = 84.17%

Hey I'm seriously thinking of signing up for the series just to make training a little more interesting trough the winter. Maybe I'll see you there.

Very interesting.  I especially like the scoring method.  The best I could do in such a competition would be approximately 77.65%!

It definitely takes the edge off of the boredom that is slowly hitting me. Its cheap money to register too - 12 bucks or so if you're a Y member. All the Y's don't open until 12-1 pm on Sunday's, so the place will be deserted except for the volunteers and athletes. I signed up for 10 am or 11 am for the Dec 12 race. Hope to see you there!

Thanks Lara for the insight. I seem to do real well with gels for some reason, so I think I'll experiment a little with them. Makes sense to focus on bricks as well. Thanks again.
