I finished a Half IM on 9/15 and my left knee was toast. Runners knee, real bad. I took a month off (did NOTHING) and on 10/18 my son was born. The 3-4 hours of sleep I get means that I have only had time to do high intensity work out on the eliptical for 45-60 minutes, 3-4 times a week. I haven't swam, or biked since 9/15. Next week I start my IM training for Louisville on 8/31.

My little man is finally getting into a routine and not needing a bottle every 2-4 hours.

I still feel like crap for taking alomost 3 months off. Am I a Dead Man Walking in terms of IM Louie???

Don't worry, I don't think you loose your base that quick. Just start slow specially on the running. I took a few weeks off from the bike and concentrated on the run and my knees were killing me, as soon as i got back on the bike, my knees are feeling better

good luck on your IM quest

You've got almost 8 months to ramp things back up.  Take it easy and follow a smart approach to loading back up in the beginning.  Listen to your body and back off/rest as needed so you don't re-injure things.

You should be fine if you approach it right.

I agree with Rick. You've plenty of time and build into your plan.  For me, I would find an intermediate goal to train to.  I would have a hard time training 8 months for an IM.  I would look for something in May, train for that and then build into your heavy IM training in June and July.  If you can find a half then you could do the 1/2 IM training plan and then use the bridge plan from here.

Hopefully things work out with the knee.

I agree. Maybe the Kansas Half Iron would be a good race. But if not, that's fine since you would be in my age group an kick my butt.

If you are... I am too!

I had a HIM on 10/7... and I took off until.... uuummm... January. I've done some training but not much. It's been pretty pathetic.

But yea, I'm doing IMKY too in 08.

Just get back to it in January and you will be fine.

BTW- I ended my season with a running injury as well. I hope it doesn't pop back up again.

Your in fine shape as long as you can keep that knee healthy. (And also not pick up any other overuse injuries)

The rest/downtime probably did you plenty good.

FWIW: my IM is in June and I have been down for the last 4 weeks with Shoulder Surgery. (Have not been in the water since September when I re-injured it)

Just take your comeback slow and easy and listen to your body

You will be fine, its not like IMKY is 2months away and you have never ran more than 5miles.

I agree you should be fine but don't be surprised if it takes 3 months or more to get back to where you were...be patient.

I was off for 7 weeks with surgery and when I started back my runs were 10-15 minutes long just to get back at it gently next week 15-20 minutes 3 x a week. I see plenty of folks go out for the first run in months and try and run 5 miles as that used to be their standard run..don't do that.

You need to listen to your body and be able to take more rest or back off if need be and expect first month to be getting used to training again.

Do you have a plan you will follow and one to follow once you start back?

The real good thing about taking a break is your body gets chance to fully recover and you get that deep desire in your belly that keeps you motivated and wanting to train and feeling lucky to be able to do so.

Congrats on your son~

Enjoy every minute of your IM training/joureny~

If you suffer from patellar tendonitis and if you don't already use ChoPat straps or similar, give these a try. These things are my running savior.
