Migraine. Worst one I've had in a long time.

Dog intervals. It's recovery week, so I'll log it, but after this week running with the dogs will not get logged.

Left knee is a little wonky today. Hurt a bit during the short run. Back and shoulders are sore, too, but other than that, I'm in good shape. Using the Compex's active recovery mode on the calves and hamstrings right after the race must have really helped, because they feel tight but not sore. Or I just didn't work hard enough (that's a possibility too).

I was really disappointed in my performance on this race, not only in terms of actual times, but in position in my age group. I am used to being nearly the last in my age group out of the water, but I usually pass a few people on the bike and more on the run. This time, despite all of my training on hills and watching my heart rate so I'd have something left for the run, I performed miserably on the bike and even worse on the run. It was my worst half marathon EVER.
Dean reminds me that this was a difficult 70.3, under hot conditions, and that he saw some women quit after the first loop. There were also about 20 women in my age group that either didn't start or were DQ'd and didn't get times at all. So I suppose if I look at my capability a year ago and realize that I might not have been able to finish this race last year, and to know that at least I was able to push through and finish the race in the 8-hour medal cutoff, I should be happy. But I'm not.
I recognize that I'm spending too much time socializing during training, and that I need to make some hard decisions. Am I training for performance, or am I trying to keep training fun? It seems like the two cannot mix.

So we found out today that Dean could have had a Clearwater spot at Lake Stevens if he would have just wandered over to the roll down tent when he heard them announce the Clearwater rolldown. I'm married to a Clearwater qualifier!!! Wow!
So now another 70.3 will get put on the schedule for later in the season next year so Dean can race and claim his Clearwater spot. It probably won't happen at Oceanside because it's so early in the season that truly the top 1-5 in his age group will claim them, but at Lake Stevens the rolldown went all the way to number 23 in his age group (and Dean was 21st). We figure that's because most of the other racers already qualified at an earlier 70.3. So we're looking for a hilly 70.3 to do at the end of next summer. Maybe Boulder? Maybe Lake Stevens again. We'll see. It will be interesting because we are still talking about France next summer, too.
