Did a morning ride trying to find the trail to Jemez Falls but we didn't find it. Ended up just doing a lot of double track riding in rolling terrain. Lots of fun.

Awesome MTB riding in New Mexico at the Valles Caldera National Preserve. We rented some 29er MTB in ABQ and drove up to our VRBO house in Jemez Springs. Next day we drove up to the San Antonio Hot Springs and started the ride on a single track along a stream going north until we were at the preserve border. We "snuck" in by jumping the fence and found the service road VC10. From there we rode to VC8 and began the climb up between the San Antonio & Cerro Seco peaks, which required several stops to allow the HR to recover, the climb at 8500 feet really required a slow (4.5-5mph) and steady pace. On our way down we came across a very large brown bear which was much more freaked out seeing some MTB's coming at it and coming to sliding stops as it turned around and hauled @ss out of there. Unbelievable how fast a large bear can run. We made our way back down to the main road SR4 which meant we had to do a 900' climb back up 126 to get back to the car and the hot springs. The climb was the slowest and hardest thing I've ever done on a bike before. 4-4.5 mph for a majority of the climb, any push harder meant that we had to stop and let the HR settle down.
