I took an off day, spending the evening icing both my knee and shin in hopes that any pain I have in them will have completely vanished by the time Saturday's race comes around. I'm definitely anxious for this race. While I'm sure I'll finish, my injuries along with having to reign in my mileage these past few weeks has got me worried about how I will preform.

This is the first time I've ever dealt with an injury so I'm unsure how to approach things this week and what kind of kind of taper training to do (stay completely away from running until Saturday vs. doing a few two/three mile runs). I guess I'll just have to take it as it comes.

My splits on the first mile totaled 5:32 and I was winded. After watching the leaders of the Chicago marathon I'm in even more awe of them and how they can keep a pace like that for an entire marathon.

Chicago marathon day. What a great day for a race, too bad I wasn't racing. It was a little chilly, but not bad if you're running 26.2. I cheered on my wife with Jason, Carly's friend's husband. He is a runner and we were both very envious of all the runners. We both wished we could've been apart of that great atmosphere; it was awesome. I am already thinking about signing up for the 2010 Chicago race!

October 10

In Chicago for the wife and her friend Kate's marathon. It was very cool to be around the race expo and visit all of the vendor stations. I finally got to sample the Gu/Cliff/Lara blocks/chomps and I like. I'll have to incorporate those into next seasons training.
Afterwards we did some walking around downtown and then joined in with the girl's prerace meal.

October 9

Run
  • 41m 06s
  • 5.65 miles
  • 07m 16s /Mi

With reservations I went out for a run in the cool and windy late morning. I had my fingers crossed that my right knee and my left shin would cooperate. Well, my shin had a dull ache to it but it was something I could deal with. Around mile four, like before, my knee, which had'nt hurt he entire run, made itself known. At first I tried to ignore it, and I walked the hills, but that did little to help me out. Eventually it hurt to run the entire time and I ended up walking the last mile and a half.

Before my knee pain I was pleased with my pace despite trying to keep and moderate effort and running mostly into a sturdy wind.

Swim

  • 1312.34 yards
  • 01m 19s /100 yards

First swim since Aug 23rd and I definitely felt it. To start off, it didn't help that I had just lifted my upper body before hopping in the pool. I never reached a point to where I was aerobically tired, but my shoulders and triceps didn't care for me swimming too much. This was to be expected. I'm just glad to have finally gotten in some pool time.
