With reservations I went out for a run in the cool and windy late morning. I had my fingers crossed that my right knee and my left shin would cooperate. Well, my shin had a dull ache to it but it was something I could deal with. Around mile four, like before, my knee, which had'nt hurt he entire run, made itself known. At first I tried to ignore it, and I walked the hills, but that did little to help me out. Eventually it hurt to run the entire time and I ended up walking the last mile and a half.

Before my knee pain I was pleased with my pace despite trying to keep and moderate effort and running mostly into a sturdy wind.

First swim since Aug 23rd and I definitely felt it. To start off, it didn't help that I had just lifted my upper body before hopping in the pool. I never reached a point to where I was aerobically tired, but my shoulders and triceps didn't care for me swimming too much. This was to be expected. I'm just glad to have finally gotten in some pool time.

First run after two days off from running. I was hoping to rest my right knee and get rid of a nagging left shin. The goal was to keep a decent pace but not push my legs too hard. Right off the bat my legs felt very fresh and my knee felt fine, but I could feel some weakness/achiness in my shin. However, it wasn't enough to slow me down despite its bothersome feeling. At mile three the knee pain came out of no where. It wasn't enough to stop me this time and luckily I was almost home so I tentatively pushed through that as well.

I guess I'll just have to continue to rest my legs and go easy on them. Maybe I need to go back to the shoe inserts I had in my in my old pair of shoes I ditched last month?

Indoor bike again as a continue to rest my knee from the pavement pounding. Never had a chance to make it to the pool. I really got the rpms up during the last five+ minutes. I'm kind looking forward to a moderate run tomorrow night to see how my legs feel.

October 4

Bike
  • 30m
  • 8.87 miles
  • 17.74 Mi/hr

Easy ride indoors. Legs felt sluggish; I also didn't want to push it too hard in order to rest my knee.

Signed up for a new gym with the wife today. The choice came down to the only two places quasi close by that had an indoor pool facility. Since cost was relatively the same we went with fitness center that was closer to us (which my wife says will motivate her to go more - she's normally just an outside runner and an in-the-house workout girl). This place is much more pricier than my Gold's membership, but it also has a ton more amenities. Did I mention it has a pool? I'm very stoked to start hitting the pool again and getting some laps in. Maybe I'll swim tomorrow tonight after work (which would also be good for my knee).

October 3

Run
  • 55m 49s
  • 7.52 miles

This was supposed to be my last long run before my half-marathon - a twelve miler. I slept in this morning to avoid the cold morning start. When I finally got out there my legs felt very fresh and I was moving very well. The two easy runs earlier in the week were really helping. Then at about mile 5 my right knee started make it self known again. First on the uphills, then constantly. I tried to walk it off and see if it would go away, or see if I could push through it, but it became way too bothersome. Finally I decided to call the wife to come pick me up because I just didn't want to walk the remaining 4 miles home.

This sucks. I'm gonna have to really lay off working my knee too much in the next two weeks if I want it to be ready for my race. With two unsuccessful long runs I really hope I'm adequately prepared for a solid race. We'll see how this ends up.
