Dorothy Pastore died today. Granny wasn't my Granny in a blood way, only in a REAL way. She was my daughter's best friend (Nico) and Nico's Great Grandmother... Granny was very cool, smart and you would never know that she was almost 100. She could drive, had a beautiful smile with a full set of perfect/original teeth. Granny didn't believe in meds... she popped vitamins; lots of them. The last time we hung out she was laughing and being her good natured self. She absolutely adored Nico and the adoration was reciprocated by Nico as well. Granny is so much a part of my little girl and I see so much of Granny in her. A few weeks ago Granny fell and broke her hip and needed surgery. They put her on prescription meds... I know that this really got her goat and she probably just decided to call it a life. In my eyes, Granny was too young to die. I will miss her. She was my granny too (my only granny). Last month my friend Thatcher died. He broke his neck in a fall do to a heart attack; the result of huffing paint. He was found dead, behind a Wall-Mart in Denver. Thatcher was a smart and funny guy. He was a pilot and had his MBA from some prestigious school. He fell on hard times recently and did some hard drugs. I guess he took a job painting (cash under the table) and learned the art of paint huffing. So fucking sad. And I am sitting here at work, reflecting on the last few years of my life. The twists and turns, the heart-aches, the dissapointments, the fun times, all of it. I realize that I need to be a better friend to the people that I care about. Life is short. Lastly, I booked this really cool indie-rock band at my club last night. It was slow, mostly because everyone was here on Halloween and probably just too hung over to try to come out for some little band from Portland. The few who did were treated to an awesome show by an up and coming band who sounds something like Modest Mouse but with better lyrics. It was cool... they drove the kids who were here into a frenzy. I love shows like that. The unlikely ones. Sort of like the first time I saw The White Stripes, there were only 5 people in the room total (including the bartender and the sound guy). Jared Mees and the Grown Children were a total surprise… I freaking loved them.
