Uphill and downhill... my quads hurt so I cut the run short and jumped on my bike.

Snowing out today, so probably no bike ride unless it clears up. I'm totally a far weather cyclist. Looking to run though. I let Ramone out this morning. I couldn't find him. I was calling him and looking around... then just by chance I looked inside a car and there he was, driving my neighbors Sunurban; just sitting there as smug as can be. Made me laugh. And here is a proper picture of my new racing machine... Photobucket

Rode with my the "Spanish Pro's" from the Bike Service...
Carlos is a sprinter and he set a furious pace down highway 6, I had a tough time staying in his draft this morning. Then we hit the steep 4 mile climb up Cordillera where I thought I was going to get my ass handed to me. Ciro and Carlos were hammering and for the first two miles I just hung on. Eventually Ciro pulled away and Carlos dropped off (climbing is not his specialty) and I started to groove. for about 3/4 of mile the hill goes from about 8% to about 12% and that is where I made my move. I caught Ciro and then put over 100 meters on him by the top. That felt good! After that we rode down to Wolcott and again, Carlos just hammered. I actually got dropped for a bit then worked my ass off to catch up. We rode up I-70 to Avon into a huge headwind. A killer ride.

One complaint about my Cervelo. The drive train is set up for a pussy and I spin out easily. I don't have an RPM censor on this bike but I know I average over 100rpm's compared to 80 on my tri bike (tri bike: 54/42 x 23/12). The Cervelo came with a 50/34 x 26/13... totally not going to work for me. I have decided to replace the cassette with a 23x11 and hopefully this will be better. One thing about Campy Record, freaking expensive. Anyway, I have a 26 x 13 Campy Record 10 speed cassette with about 300 miles on it. If anyone wants this great climbing cassette, let me know cuz I'll need to eBay it if not.

20-30 mph headwinds on the way home. Quads are still sore but better than yesterday. Interestingly, my ankles and feet which were sore prior to Boston feel great.

I just entered the St. George Marathon lottery. The Lottery is open until May 4th with the winners announced May 11. This is one of the most scenic and fastest marathon courses in the World. If your thinking about a Fall marathon, enter the lottery. Who knows, you just might get in!

Not my official time.

OMG... what a race! By far not a PR, but really that is not the story. I ran well for 20, great for 15 (sure, I was fooling myself). I haven't run anything fast in months and the early 6:20 pace took a toll. by the time I got to the top of heartbreak hill i was dreaming of more uphill. My quads were screaming a murderous howl and I wanted to start walking. I played every mental trick I could to keep running. I slowed and slowed and just hung on to a respectable time (albeit, my slowest Boston) and then proceeded to the beer drinking festivities that followed. I had a blast hanging out with Bridgette, Jim, Mark and the rest of the debaucher's who kicked it with us last night. Traveling today. Race report soon. I'm ready to get back at training, to pick my next marathon and to get fast. Cheers, DD
