August 10

I'm back in town.  Ugh.  I'm tired from the travel, so no workout today.  Besides, the knee puts me back to a red square day because of the hiking a few days ago.  Not good, but could be worse.  Hopefully icing, Advil, and laying off of it a few days will help.  If not I'm pretty much f**ked.

I'll catch up with everyone later.  Right now I have some decompressing to do.

August 9

No workouts today, dangit.  I'm supposed to do a 30 minute run, but my knee is still a little swollen and sore from hiking down the mountain a couple days ago.  So the wise thing is to bag it.  I'm also supposed to do a swim, but I'm bagging that also because there's too much to do before I leave.  I'll log the time fishing this morning so I won't have a yellow square.   ;)

My flight leaves at 9:00p Alaska time and I arrive in DFW at 10:10a Dallas time.  I figure it'll be about 95 degrees by then, so I'll have a nice welcome home.  Cry  I've got a 1.5 hour ride with 30' of hills tomorrow evening.  Don't know how I'll get that worked in, considering the lack of sleep I'll have tomorrow.

August 8

Bike
  • 4h 01m 30s
  • 70.10 miles
  • 17.42 Mi/hr

12:00p. 60*, warming to 65*. calm winds until the trip back.

Rode from Wasilla out past Willow and back. Somewhat hilly course, but mainly rollers. Stopped at a road-side pullout next to a small lake to eat my PBJ sandwich, and almost took a nap. The warm sun and cool breeze coming off the lake made it hard to stay awake! Wind didn't pick up until I started back and of course, was a headwind. Beautiful scenery, but unfortunately Mt. McKinley was cloaked in a veil of clouds so I wasn't able to get a pic. My ave. speed was about 17.6 until I hit a massive hill at about mile 68. I had to stand to climb it and I was close to stopping and walking up! After that hill, my ave. speed dropped to 17.4. Bad, bad hill.

10:40a.  I'll catch up with everyone later today.  I gotta get ready to ride....

Today's bike ride has been changed.  Due to the lack of a car to borrow to drive down to Turnagain Arm (it died on the way back from fishing last night.  thank you AAA for the tow!), I'll be going out north to Willow, Alaska, and Mt. McKinley!  It's about 150 miles from Willow, but it looms large in the north.  Hopefully the skies will be clear enough for a great pic.

Today's run is supposed to be at LT.  Since I still have some bothersome blisters and my right knee is still a little sore, I'll change it to an "easy" run.

**** at this point I had had enough of the leaking goggles, so I called it a day

Going into Anchorage to pickup a new chain, then riding at the Coastal Trail for an easy 45 minutes.  Gotta find a place to swim laps too.  Although, I might have to bag the swims this week because the pools up here don't seem to want to accommodate lap swimmers.  :(

New 10k PR!

WTF was this?? My swim and bike let me down but my run catapults me past my goal? Needless to say, this was a great run!

Swim

Bleccchh! Had to roll over on my back about 4 times to get the water out of my leaky goggles. Bad sighting, too. But I came close to my goal, so I'm good with it.

2007 Northern Trust Triathlon Final Preliminary Results:
The transition times are not separated out, but the swim time is accurate b/c they took my number as I exited the water.  The only other time they took my number was at the start of the run, which means that both transitions are counted in the bike time.  T1 was about 3:00, T2 was about 1:00.

RACE DAY!!!

After a night of swilling beer and listening to a German polka band at a local joint called Schwabenhof, meaning "Drinking House" in German, I'm ready to race!  I only had one beer so I guess it doesn't count as swilling.  More like "pre-hydrating" and "carbo-loading".  It was Spaten Optimator, which is a dark beer, so I guess I was getting a good dose of flavanoids too.

The weather looks like it'll be about 55-60 degrees at race time, with little chance of rain.  I'll have to abandon my BT tri top for long sleeves, which means a longer than normal T1.

I'm riding my bike to the race site, about 6 miles, so I'd better get a move on.  Have a great day, BT!  Race results posted as soon as I can.
