Mind over Matter

October 24

Today, I am off to Wichita for a job interview. This is a big thing for me, and we'll see how it goes, but I'm very excited. I'm taking the day off, mentally preparing for it like tapering...I'm going in there like an invading army. Wish me luck, and hopefully by this time tomorrow things will be going well!

Went for a ride in Conroe this morning with Courtney...who was under the false impression that it would be 16-18 miles. Who's fault was that? This guy's. Sorry, Cort! It was cold, and she froze, while I was nice and toasty in my Nike Compression shirt. There was really no end to my lack of chivalry. One of the best parts of the ride was when we got caught up in the Ironstar Half-IM. We stayed out of the way, didn't bother anyone, and Aaron flew by us. He probably didn't hear us, but I cheered like a maniac for him. Aaron, if you remember passing a very slow person with a Camelbak on that started shouting like an idiot after you went by on 105...that was this guy. The other great part was how peaceful and beautiful 2854 was. Love that road.

Overall, it was fun and easy way to get the mileage in. I hope Courtney will ride with me again, because I much prefer having someone to ride with rather than just looking like a moron on a mountain bike on the side of the road. I much prefer other people have to share my moronocy... moronitique... moronness... yup.

Good start to the day.

Did a swim in the afternoon. Because I can.

Do have a little pain in a toe on the right foot from walking around so much yesterday, and my right knee is hurting a little from the ride, but overall good shape. Edit: Did the bike in the morning, swim in the afternoon. I was 3 miles biking and a 10k running away from an Olympic tri for the day...score! Glad I did it, but everything's tired now.

Ran a 5k this morning. 2 miles warm-up 1st mile: 5:36 2nd mile: 6:09 3rd mile: 6:13 last .1: :37 Total time: 18:35 2 miles cool-down This was quite slow for me, but was only 30 hours after the 11 miler, so it was okay. I'll get faster, so no real worries. My brother finished 3rd, I finished 4th, it was a little neighborhood race, but they have them every other weekend, so that's fun. Went to the Renaissance Festival and had a great time. Got my protein (turkey leg) and simple and complex carbohydrates (funnel cake!). Did the knife throw, and was amazing. That is now my weapon of choice. Actually won a prize: "The Bearer of this Coupon may redeem it for One Kiss from any willing man, woman, or beast." The possibilities are endless! Despite destroying my brother at knife throwing (which we can all agree is an important life skill), he continued to berate me about the race. He'd never beaten before at a race. That can not be allowed to continue.

Very nice run. Felt really good. Needed some more hydration and fuel, but I could have kept this up for a long time. Making me feel like the marathon can happen. Especially on a day where I felt like shit. Man, that felt good today!

I feel like I was hit repeatedly with a sack of hammers while sleeping. Still sore upper body (man, I'm a wuss), plus a 25 hour day yesterday (A different job? Don't mind if I do!), and I'm wiped out. Found an interesting online article: http://www.askmen.com/sports/foodcourt_60/75_eating_well.html Maybe I'll...run today. A really long run today, two shorties tomorrow, a 5k on Saturday, and a Sunday bike. That'll round out the week. Was working on a 10-day workout cycle last night for the winter. It would include 3 swimming workouts, 6 or 7 running workouts, and 4 or 5 bike workouts, with one off day. We'll see. OH! And I refound the Raspberry Chipotle sauce! This stuff makes cold cuts a favorite again. If you don't have Raspberry Chipotle sauce, I just can't understand how you live. I got this great stuff from San Antonio (at the Pioneer Mill...if you live in Texas, you must go there!), and had just finished it off, putting me in a blue funk for a few weeks...until I found a reasonable replica at the grocery store! Life is good again! EDIT: I saw either the world's biggest coyote, or a wolf yesterday. Yes, here, in The Woodlands. I really think it was a wolf, but I'm willing to say it was a coyote if nobody believes me.

Good bike. Watched my heart rate climb from 155 to 175 while going the same pace throughout, though. Not so good on that part yet. Have a whole winter to work it out, though.

Went for a short run with my old cross country team. It was good to see Coach again, plus Daniel, the guy I had lunch with yesterday. Weird to think how much time has passed since then, yet things were so normal between the three of us. Will get in something else, probably bike, later today.

Good day, little sore from yesterday's chest workout. I had let the chest atrophy for strength in more tri-related muscles, but time to get sexy for the ladies again. :)

Swim

Solid swim, just gettin it done. Legs were sore afterwards, but arms felt good.

Had lunch with an old friend from high school. It was good catching up with him. We'd been on the cross country team together, and since then he's been in the Marines and I've gone to college. Makes for interesting conversation. :) Something I blocked out from the race on Sunday: --At the bottom of a very long hill, I see a biker. This was unusual on Sunday, as I was seeded highly enough for the swim that there weren't many people in front of me. I decide, come hell or high water, I am going to pass this guy by the top of the hill. I start pushing. I start grinding. I start pushing my heart near arrest. As I get to the top, I pull even! I'm so excited, that I look over to see what number the guy is (you know, what number is on his shoulder). I am looking at a septagenarian. I am looking at a man who is NOT in the race, NOT wearing racing clothing, but IS riding a bike nearly as poor as my own. Hubris, thy name is Kevin. EDIT: Given that last week was taper, can I count that as my low week, and now have 3 more hard weeks? Please? I feel like a kid in an arcade, asking dad for more quarters.
