2010 - Will the heart let me train?

February 9

Swim
  • 29m 43s
  • 1600.00 yards
  • 01m 51s /100 yards

Speed workout (limited by time at the pool, so I could only do something short and fast).

w/u - 200

Main set:
10 x 100 on 2:30
6 x 50 with :15 rest

c/d - 100 easy

Because this was a short workout with nothing longer than the warm up 200, it was very fast for me. If only I could average this on normal workouts! ;-P

Alright, so it may be too early to start thinking about this but I've got to write it down to get it out there .....

Can there be a sub 3 in me for Boston???  If everything fell into place and I satyed healthy and on the same training pace schedule would that be possible?

The fact that I ran a 7:06 paced 20 miler Sunday and a 7:19 14 miler last night really got me to thinking about it.  "They" say that you should be doing your long runs at 10 - 20% off of your marathon goal pace.  Using McMillan based on my latest 5k time I "should" be good for a 3:01:20 and my long runs should be in the 7:26 - 8:26 range.  Right now my long runs are BELOW that, and are even below my BQ race from last year.

If I can recovery from those quickly enough to be able to rip another one off on the next run then maybe I am aiming too easy for my goal pace?  I guess the telling point will be if I can keep recovering well enough from the harder/longer runs.  But my mind is definitely working here on the potential.

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmm.

M-Long

3 big loops (3 miles each) and 3 regular loops (1.7 miles each) around neighborhood. Kept it smooth as I could. Actually ran a better pace than I thought I would. About 25 degrees with 10 - 15-ish mph winds. It was dark by the time I did my last two laps.

Pushed the last loop as I've been trying to on my longer runs - 6:52 pace for last 1.7 mile lap.

I had an 8:00 meeting in Baltimore and had to be out the door from home by 7:15, so didn't get to do the morning 14.  I did have the alarm set for 4:10 and woke up with it, but just wasn't getting out of bed that early in this cold ........ so I'm leaving work a little early to get in the run in the afternoon.

Problem is, it is supposed to be 20 - 30 mph sustained winds this afternoon and only 30 degrees out.  F'ing wonderful ......

w/u - 3 x 100 (1 swim, 1 kick, 1 pull)

Main set:
2 x 400 (2nd pull)
3 x 300 (3rd pull)
3 x 200 (3rd pull)
3 x 100 (3rd pull)

c/d - 100 easy

So I put out the call over on Slowtwitch to see if there was anyone locally coach-wise that does a simple one on one for swimming to help my slow azz get better in the water.  I found a guy in the Towson area (northern part of Baltimore) that fits the bill and seems to be a pretty good resource.  I'm going to try to schedule a session with him on his open nights (I think he coachesa group two nights a week) to say "Hi" and get a workout in with him.

Then he charges $85 for a 75 - 90 minute session to go over one or two specific issues with your freestyle stroke and does above and underwater video of your stroke.  Plus he'll give specific drills and techniques to correct whatever error there is in the stroke.

He sounds like a great resource and I just need to see if we can float that cost to get a session to have him evaluate me.  We'll see how that goes!

2 easy big loops around the neighborhood. As Jorge would say, "guilty slow."

100 swim

Surprisingly not all that sore (yet) from the 20 yesterday.

Long

8 loops around Centennial. Really went too fast, but I am almost positive it had to do with the fact it was so damn cold!! I even went so far last night as to see if my gym system had any sort of indoor track anywhere so I could run inside. ;-P

I did take one dive on an ice patch, but it was classic as I just morphed it into a forward roll and came up running. Got a "nice roll!" from the lady I had just passed. ;)

Pushed the last mile as I have been on my long runs. Cranked out a 6:23 for it ......

Recovery brick.

Skated around the neighborhood (very icy on the roads). Thought this was easy pace. But it is a little too fast to be considered a recovery.

Today is Collin Michael's birthday.  4 years old today!  Happy birthday my little Snuggle Bug!!!!
